Default Studer B67 - hopefully very basic issue

Hi there

After reading this forum for a couple of years I finally took the plunge and signed up!

I have had a Studer B67 for about 4 years now and it's always worked fine, it's actually been an integral part of my music life and I can't live without it anymore.

Anyway, I have no experience of repairing reel to reels at all or even basic servicing. I thought it would be a good idea to post here and hopefully get some knowledge.

So the problem; recently one of the channels has suffered a drop in volume. I can work around this by using the uncalibrated level control, but this brings in questions of uneven saturation which is far from ideal as I like to pass whole mixes through the tape.

So what are the steps I should take to remedy this? Cleaning, testing, whatever, please educate me. Everything else seems fine with the machine, so I'm hoping a few basics can get me up and running gain.

Any help is much appreciated.

Adam

Hi Adam and welcome.

I presume you've already cleaned the heads?

When you say the volume has dropped....
-Does it affect the playback sound from a known good tape?
-Can you get a decent E-E signal in rec-ready/monitor mode, i.e. passing the source thru' the studer to the amp?
-Have you tried recordings taped on the studer on another deck to compare the recorded level?

Hi Nick,

No I haven't. I don't want to even touch it without advice in case I create more problems. Any tips on the best cleaning materials?

Thanks,
Adam.

Hi Adam,

I know these machines quite well, I'm also in London.

We need to establish if the problem is on the record or replay side.

What happens if you replay a good known tape? does it play well or is it poor on one channel. If playback is good then that means the problem is on record.

You clean the heads using a cotton bid dipped in isopropyl alcohol which is available from chemists. I prefer to use head cleaner which is available from specialists tape suppliers.

Please feel free to contact me by using the PM system (private message) if you need further help
