Daily Telegraph article 1950s TV on digital
There was an article today on page 5 of the Telegraph about a man who has got his 1950s Bush TV22A ready for the digital switchover by getting an RF modulator. I'm not an expert on these things, but won't he also need some sort of 625 to 405 line convertor?

Re: Daily Telegraph article 1950s TV on digital
This was shown on BBC South East on Monday evening if I remember.
A retired TV engineer was shown using an old Bush TV he had converted ready for the switchover . You may be able to check it out on BBC iPlayer. If I still have the recording {On a Dion recorder from Tesco's !} I will try to play it again and report back . Regards Peter W...Reelguy |

OK, Update..
The programme was BBC South East on Wednesday 29th Feb. The TV enthusiast was a Mr Brian Maley from Whitstable. He was using a Bush 22A ? Also shows a few radios in the background. Hope that is of interest,I assume this is about the same story in the paper. It should be watchable on BBC iPlayer even if you are in another area. Peter W....Reelguy |

Usual garbled journalism. It sounds as if the set itself has somehow been 'converted'. Unless someone here actually knows the chap, we'll probably remain in the dark.

Re: Daily Telegraph article 1950s TV on digital
Could it be that hard to design a Freeview box with 405-line output?
There must be DVB-T receivers elsewhere in the world which can output VHF, positive vision and AM sound while I've had a UK Freeview box which could output 525-lines NTSC as well as PAL 625.

Re: Daily Telegraph article 1950s TV on digital
Reality check: Romantic as it may be, 405 lines was an obscure broadcast standard, in use in only a very small part of the world, and it outlived its usefulness long ago. Manufacturers probably have better uses for the few bytes of flash memory; the on-screen menu "real estate"; the calls to the helpline from customers who managed accidentally to select a mode which their TV could not resolve and -- most importantly -- the hours of development work it would take up, to provide an option for a standard which suited only a handful of surviving receivers. Especially when everyone who has a working 405-line TV set must necessarily already have some sort of standards converter, in order for it to be any use at all.

Re: Daily Telegraph article 1950s TV on digital
Why? There are no broadcast transmitters anywhere in the world that use AM sound or +ve vision modulation. The last ones were turned off with French DSO. Most DVB-T boxes don't even feature a modulator.

Re: Daily Telegraph article 1950s TV on digital
No, but they did before DSO and so for any box to be compatible with legacy TV sets it has to have those features. I'm thinking of Belgium in particular which used a mixture of positive/negative, AM and FM modulation.
Almost all have composite video output though.

I only ever used it once myself, to check that was indeed a genuine 525-line/60Hz 3.58MHz NTSC colour signal.
