A couple of radios in an Orpington shop
The 'Hidden Treasures' antique shop in Orpington (Google will give you the address and how to get there) had a couple of radios today. I did not buy either, so they are probably still there.
One was a Pye wooden cased set, looked to have a number of short wave bands from the dial. I didn't try to extract it from the pile to read the model number. Looks like the 19D on the radiomuseum site, but I am not sure. I think priced at £45 The other was a Vidor Vanguard battery portable. I have one of these, it's mostly valved (a couple of germanium diodes as well) and covers MW, LW and VHF/FM. I think £40. They also had a number of mains electric (synchronous motor) clocks priced around £30 each. |

Re: A couple of radios in an Orpington shop
My local antique shop also asks about £45 for 'working' vintage radios. Some people must be willing to pay that much, because they seem to sell.

Re: A couple of radios in an Orpington shop
I would have thought that the Vidor Vanguard being one of very few Battery portable VHF sets was well worth £40 I would certainly pay that.

That brings back memories, there used to be a government surplus radio store in Orpington High Street, just past Chiselhurst Road going toward the pond.

Re: A couple of radios in an Orpington shop
Ironically, the Vidor Vanguard I have (and which I probably paid about the same amount for) I bought from a shop in Bristol about 25 years ago when I was at the University.
As for prices, surely the value of something is what somebody will pay for it. Some people will pay large amounts of money for a particular postage stamp. I could easily see somebody paying a high price for a radio they were particularly interested in, even if you might sometime see the same sort of set a lot cheaper. |
