School for [RADAR] Secrets1946
This is being shown again on TPTV at 6-45pm tonight. Radio Times tells me that it was written and directed by Peter Ustinov. I didn't know that-an extraordinary man! Quote "some trifling action scenes to distract from the reams of techno speak. Unlike other flag-wavers of the period, Ustinov suffuses the film with a distorted attitude to heroism and a cartoonish wit."

It was the "Reams of technospeak" that sold it for me, Dave!
That noise you can hear is SWMBO'S eye's rolling...

Re: School for secrets - Talking Pictures.
I got this on a DVD from Renown Pictures ages ago who also run Talking Pictures now, a great film. The plot is excellent, photography superb, technically not far from the truth, propaganda small, and done by very famous actors (the days when actors acted and were not typecast). What's not to like? (adverts, but I have the DVD!)

Re: School for secrets - Talking Pictures.
Looks an interesting movie, and one I actually haven’t seen before.
Thankfully, TPTV is on Freesat too, so I can record it on the aging-but-still-fully-working Humax box and watch something else meantime. Our ‘smart’ tv uses the roof antenna for terrestrial, but the single tuner means if you record anything using it, you can’t watch anything else while it’s recording. |

Curiously, I was just re-reading 'Radar, a Report on Science at War' over the weekend (published by HMSO in 1945, originally by the US government.) Let's see what comes up in the TV production... looking forward!

Re: School for secrets - Talking Pictures.
Unfortunately, I was unable to watch it as I was in a meeting all evening. Typical that something I want to watch is on when I'm not available - and I don't have the hardware for recording programmes.

Re: School for secrets - Talking Pictures.
I only saw half of it the first time round and I was surprised how good it is. Despite the initial "wooden" acting style of the period there is a lot of humour in there behind the stiff upper lip presentation and quiet heroism. The technical shots were fascinating and the raid on the Infra Red TX was both humorous and grim. It seemed strangely authentic and reminded me of the unexpected killing in "Went The Day Well". Ustinov did a good job-his input explains a lot [post2*]. I'm near Chain Home and a hidden bunker here on the south coast.

Re: School for secrets - Talking Pictures.
I watched it and was extremely disappointed with it, I had hoped to see lots of EF50s and mention of Phillips etc. Instead fleeting references were made about anything technical, mainly near the start of the film, not much mention of German and US research, for the rest just a story about various people brought together. I see Peter Ustinov directed it and also wrote the screenplay. As he was young at the time he had lot to learn.
I recorded it but then deleted it. John |

Re: School for secrets - Talking Pictures.
Well that's the end of that then for you John I suppose! How about this?
Further to the Radar history of that period, Peter Scott put up a great link [at post 7*] on a thread started by Adrian H ["Facebook Old CRT's" 6/11/20]. It's found at "came across this little snippet here". This goes to an on-line copy of... "Shoreham's Radar Station The Story of RAF Truliegh Hill" by Roy Taylor. My brother in law lives at Shoreham and I was just interested in a possible connection with buried war time surplus there, not the CRT's. However, the story of this Radar Station actually includes a very comprehensive and readable overview of the development of Radar [as partly shown in the film last night]. If anyone has missed that link, it's really worth taking a look Dave W. Last edited by dave walsh; 25th Nov 2020 at 12:39 pm. |
