Garrard Autoslim restore
arrived today.
can anyone help, how might i find a mechanical layout of this deck, also i'm sure someone can tell me what cartridge is fitted. put a diode [in place of the rectifier] and need to get a high wattage resistor to drop the volts, played around and looks like about 175-200 ohm. a 150 did'nt drop enough. got some buzz with finger on the mono lead and the motor turns, but a couple of loose retaining clips in bottom of cabinet, can someone confirm the layout of the bearing under the platter. what i have does not look right. surely the platter does not just sit on the exposed bearing ? Re: garrard autoslim restore
There should be thrust washer both above and below the bearing. Don't run it as in your photo. The cartridge looks an Acos Stereo GP93-1, check the number on the side of it. Try a 175 ohm 5W surge resistor. The retaining clips fit on the 2 transit bolts. It sounds like you've bought a BUSH SRP31C record player?

Re: Garrard Autoslim restore
Yes I wish I had checked the deck first, I'm missing the round drive cog mechanism, wondered why there were spring clips loose on side of deck.!!

Re: Garrard Autoslim restore
The drive cog should be easy to find, it was fitted to most of the "Autoslim" variants. Put an advert in the "wanted" section of the forum, and I'm pretty sure someone will have a spare.

Re: Garrard Autoslim restore
Just an update, fixed in diode and 330 ohm resistor and getting a reading of 10v more on the ht line but reckon as measured with a dmm this is acceptable, all other voltages are good, the amp is out of the cabinet and sounds OK from mobile phone o/p.
Waiting for deck spares. Is the acos 93-1 that is fitted a usable match for the deck? Rob. |

Re: Garrard Autoslim restore
The Acos GP93/1 is an ideal stereo cartridge for the Garrard "Autoslim". Track it at 5 grams.

Re: Garrard Autoslim restore
another update, following great info on the forum's i got the deck spinning spot on 33rpm.cleaned up all mechanics under the deck and a few problems with the idler wheel and drive set up and away we went, can only play manually at the moment as i still need the little bracket (what is it called)that sits on top of the cam wheel by the slot.
only had to replace the two smoothing capacitors made up a little bluetooth set up but volume is a little low, need a line booster for the signal. has anyone fitted one to a portable record player before, would need a changeover switch in output from the cartridge or am i talking hanging offence. Re: Garrard Autoslim restore
hi, well it looks like i need to refurb the idler wheel as there does not seem to be enough drive to move from manual to auto.

Re: Garrard Autoslim restore
You will need to improve the friction between the inner rim of the turntable and the edge of the idler wheel. Clean both. It's a very common problem. Read again the "Autoslim" Stickies above.

Re: Garrard Autoslim restore
Having robbed your 2nd Bush SRP31C of it's Idler wheel, what are you going to do with that? Ideally you could search out another Idler. The same idler is used on many Garrard models - SP25, 1000, 2000, 3000, AT6 et al.

Re: Garrard Autoslim restore
They're commonly available - at a price of course.
You can also keep a lookout for lesser scrap record players or turntables. They still keep turning up. |
