Default Test and Calibration tapes

I have a substantial quantity of test & calibration tapes that I will be sorry to send to land-fill, but I must make a clearance! I don't want the effort of disposing on eBay or similar. I'm happy to give them away - but only as a job lot.

There are 1/4", 1/2", 1" and 2" spools and a solitary BASF calibration compact cassette. The tapes are a mix of frequency calibration; reference level, 3.15kHz W&F; They were made by BASF, Ampex, Webber and a well known national broadcaster!

I want minimum fuss - so please don't ask if there's a particular x,y or z in the collection. Ideally I'd like someone to come to me in Suffolk and pick up the lot. Any takers?

Thanks for reading.

Are these the sort of thing suitable for my Ferrograph and Uher 1/4" mono machines? You may have seen my restoration thread earlier this year. If so, I'd be glad to take them off your hands! The only difficulty would be arranging pickup...

It looks like ITAM805 is the closest.

Perhaps we can all come out on top if they were to collect them and do the sorting fuss watson_dowd cannot, in order to distribute to the needy?

A suitable 1/4" mono for the Ferrograph and Uhers would do me, and the cassette could be used for my CR 240 and be the icing on the cake!

Unless my geography is seriously at fault I don't think so! That honour goes to Michael Maurice at the moment.

I never expected such interest. I’ll get back to all who have responded here and also via private message... but no one else need respond. I’ll deal with requests in time stamp order, and may get a bit of time later today to post a list of exactly what’s available. But right now heading out to a meeting.

Hi Andy,
I have sent you a message, but it appears your inbox is full!

I clearly underestimated the interest.
Ideally I'd prefer collection from home near Woodbridge in Suffolk.
I also make fairly frequent trips to Sheffield - so could collect from me there.
These things are only used infrequently. Maybe someone with more enthusiasm could be the keeper and loan them out on request?

Here's what I have to give away:

Cassette:
1 x BASF calibration cassette

1/4" tapes:
2 x 38cm/s standard calibration tapes (IEC 35microsecond time constant)
2 x 19cm/s standard calibration tapes (IEC 70microsecond time constant)
2 x "Composite calibration tapes" (reference level and frequency calibration for both 38 and 19 cm/s all to IEC standard
1 x BASF NAB calibration tape (that's all it says on the box!)
2 x 200nWb/m reference level
1 x BASF 38cm/s calibration tape (IEC 35microsecond)
1 x 3150Hz W&F test tape 38cm/s
1 x 3150Hz W&F test tape 19cm/s

1/2" Webber full track 200nWb/m reference level 38cm/s IEC 35microsecond

1"
Racal Zonal 38cm/s 50microsecond (i.e. NAB) standard calibration tape
Racal Zonal 19cm/s 100microsecond (i.e. NAB) standard calibration tape

2"
1 x 38cm/s frequency calibration tape
1 x 76cm/s frequency calibration tape

They're all "mono". All descent test tapes are made with full track heads. Flux leaking into the replay head from what is normally "blank" is negligible at high frequencies (short recorded wavelength).
Using a full track head for recording test tapes ensures there is no phase difference between tracks when azimuth is correctly aligned. The gaps in multitrack heads are never perfectly in line and this causes a phase difference between tracks which can be (wrongly) attributed to an azimuth error.
Furthermore at the recording head the actual signal is laid down as the tape leaves the recording head gap - not right in front of the gap. The actual distance downstream from the gap depends on the bias current in the head, and so, if a multitrack head was used to record a high quality calibration tape, there would be small phase differences between tracks due to inevitable differences in the bias current in each head. All this is resolved using a full track head. Back in the day these specialist heads cost a packet, given that they were made to order.

Hi Andy

I'm interested in the 1/4 inch tapes. If there's a hat count me in please.

Cheers
Dave

It's my geography at fault (or rather my evening brain) - I saw 'Folkestone' and read 'Felixstowe'!

Hi All,

Thanks to everyone who took time to respond publicly and privately to my "Test & Calibration Tapes" thread. I've been overwhelmed with messages though hampered a little by a 10 message limit on my private message mailbox.

Can I refer you all to the last line of my original posting: "Ideally I'd like someone to come to me in Suffolk and pick up the lot."

Well, the first person to respond by private message has done just that. A delightful man - although until this week we'd never met, it turns out we have much in common and several mutual acquaintances (including the legendary magnetic recording guru Mr Magowan R.I.P.) and we chewed the cud for a couple of hours.

He's unsure what do do with all the tapes, although his charitable work maintaining old recorders will, no doubt, have first call on them.
I suggested that if he had the energy he could perhaps make them available on loan to other members of the forum. He's a very active contributor, unlike this lowly diode!

Apologies to all whom I've let down... perhaps the lesson is that a fortune awaits the person who can find a way to profitably produce test tapes! Demand seems to far outstrip supply.

Best wishes
