Question 'Floating' components

What's best practice with floating components (no puns, please)? I have a 5Kv pulse transformer with a metal case that is not connected to either pole. I also have a secondary xformer where one HV winding is taken to the core. How doI positition these safely/ according to best practice. Obviously they can't be earthed! What do mfrs do?

Thanks

Hi Al, check if the insulated case unit has a case connection on it and then use this point to ground it. the unit with the neg to core should probably be grounded as the will usually be little insulation between core and primary.
These are general observations only and need to be taken in context of the item itself and its original application.
Specifically there is insulation between all elements of the transformer at different levels, so that a transformer that has the sec connected to ground/ core and probably has an Si diode as the HV rectifier should not be used in a voltage doubler circuit where the Low side is connected through a capacitor.
Some pulse transformers have the case floating with high insulation levels to either winding and should be mounted on insulating supports. I would not consider this best practice but it can reduce costs. At the very least there should be a high valve discharge resistor from the case to ground.
Anyone got a set of rules for these cases?

Thanks again Ed, very intelligent compromise that would seem ideal.
