Default Sony TC640 input & output

Hi i have just purchased a Sony TC640 and have been testing it before fitting it to my system.
I found as soon as i powered it up one of the VU lights was out.
Anyway i loaded it with tape and only got output from the left channel, so i played with the control pot and the right came in. Sounds good so i sprayed the pots with switch cleaner and then left it for a day. Went to power it up this morning and there is no output on left or right channel. I then connected a minidisc to the input and that's the same on left or right can be heard when playing.
After having a good look over the electronics i found an orange PSR 1+120 500v component connected to the power switch with a very large bulge in it. Would that be the fault?
