Some of the later made ST16/7 had a very slight difference in their construction, in that the area of the body where the flag meets the 'tail' is 'flatter'. See pics below. This may explain the 'compatibility' problem especially where clone carts are concerned, any minor difference in the moulding will be apparent.

I will investigate this more fully in due course!

I assume that all the ST range started out with the same configuration. I have just been comparing ST12s and 17s on ebay and the 17s are different. On the 12s I have seen the rubber suspension fits into the plastic holder whereas on the 17 it fits over it like a cap. The plastic on the ST12 also looks chunkier.

This is mirrored on the original ST12 I have and the stylus on the Chinese cart which looks like the ST17 on ebay. It could be that the Chinese cart was designed to fit the modern clone replacement stylus.

Anyway I have risked ordering an ST17 because as others have found I think the "78" stylus on the Chinese one is the the same diameter as the "LP" one. Having said that I have been very pleased with the sound quality from the Chinese cartridge.

The ST16/17/20/21 series are totally different in size from the older, larger ST3/4/5/8/9/10/12/14/15/19 series.

Thanks Ben, that confirms my feeling. It is also good to know that replacement styli are available for the Chinese carts. That was a concern when I bought them.

Thanks. I stand corrected. Having fiddled with ST12 and ST14 and not been happy with the adequacy of the fit, it looks like the very last ST versions were better suited.
