Default Philips 274A question

The speaker baffle on the above receiver is set back from the grill due to it's mounting to the corner verticals. This seems an odd arrangement but I assume it was a design "feature". Is there supposed to be a gasket of any sort between the two to hide the edge of the cloth when viewed form above and prevent the ingress of dust/debris? Any advice appreciated.

I'm pretty sure I had the speaker out of mine when I restored it over 14 years ago. I don't remember a gasket of any kind. If I can look this weekend, I'll see if I can take pictures.

OK had a look tonight. You are correct. There appears to be a felt gasket or similar between the baffle board and the cabinet front. The gasket appears to be about 1/4" thick.

When I restored mine, I didn't need to take the baffle out, only the speaker. I suspect if I did, the gasket would disintegrate so I have no intension of trying!

Difficult to get a good photo. This was about the best after around six attempts.

It's definitely felt or similar, I prodded it gently with a screwdriver.

It's mounted like that to reduce/prevent rattles....they thought of things like that in those days....!

It was a good excuse to run mine up after about four months.

Many thanks, Sideband. It was kind of you to take the trouble to post a photo. Clearly the gasket in mine has been removed at some point. I shall have to find some suitably thick felt.

You will probably find that the gasket is slightly thicker than that and compresses slightly when the screws are tightened. It's all to do with damping resonance.

One remaining problem. To quote from a rather poor music hall joke; "Where do you get felt?"....

Where to get felt? If not a craft shop then a piano supplies shop should have 'damper felt' (that's damper as in silent, not wet).

Found this on ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FELT-FABR...ZHfJjrLEnUySrQ

A couple of layers should do the trick. No discussion on the eBay listing though. Link provided for reference only.

Thanks again, Sideband. I failed to spot that one when I searched the site. Also might try a local upholsterer who lives in our village.

Lets see your solution when you find suitable material (and it all works of course)!
