Default "Documentor" battery portable

I've just acquired a very old "Documentor" portable reel-to-reel, looks to be early Sixties vintage. Does anyone know anything about these machines? It's quite heavy, obviously solidly built, capstan driven and uses AC erase. Tape spools are 3". There's no battery cover but looking at the battery compartment the machine is meant to run on some sort of slot-in battery pack.

Does anyone know of a source of 3" tapes?

My collection to date:

Documentor portable
Aiwa TP-60
Uher 4000-L Report mono
Uher 4200 IC stereo
Akai Cross-Field X-IV
Superscope (Marantz) CD-330 professional stereo cassette

Pete

If you can take a shot of the battery compartment, I can make an educated guess to what fit inside.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your replies. Couldn't photograph it today 'cos of the awful weather (no room to snap it indoors at the moment!!) but assuming the sun comes out tomorrow I'll take a few pics.

To all that may help me on this,

I just got my hands on one of these recorders here in Canada and want to know more about this recorder. It came with Power Unit and Battery CHarger Model # Z 125 A1 . This unit works well and is a 4 speed model and came with many acc. and came with a set of A K C headphone/microphone set. I know very little about this and would like to know what this recorder is worth.
Thanks... Robert

If it takes 1/4 inch tape you could buy a new tape on the 7inch spools and look around for second hand 3 inch spools to put the new tape on to.

Iv got an Akai X-1V too , 4 speed, solid state, direct drive belt for play and very nice. They do hum a little bit which I think has to do whith the proximity of the amp and motor. I find it hard to beleive they were made in 1964. Mine has one dicky meter as you would expect for something old. Anyway they take 5 inch spool whith 1/4 inch tape.
