Picked up a very nice Philips record player/radio has a lovely sound and plays brilliant on manual setting, but just will not play on auto. All it does is the arm lifts up and then the arm comes back down and it switches off. any ideas guys I've posted some pics.

I assume it has an overarm which you've placed on top of the pile of records? This serves the dual function of stopping the records from tilting and detecting when the last record has dropped.

There'll be some kind of linkage at the bottom of the overarm's spindle which is probably gummed up.

it has a very small spindle about a inch in length .

I've obviously misunderstood then. I thought it was an auto changer.

Can you post a picture of the top please.

I think there's probably an auto changer spindle to replace the short one. I can see the over arm. If you lift it and swing it to the right, it'll fool the player into thinking there's a stack of records on the (auto change) spindle.

EDIT.

I'm not sure how the size detector works on this. If you play an LP it may think it's a 7" single and set down in the middle of the record.

For the auto mechanism to work on this particular philips turntable you need the long spindle to stack your record/s on and then place the over arm across the records in the usual way. Pressing the auto key operates the tone arm which raises up to detect the record size 7/10/12" the record will drop and the tone arm drops onto the run-in groove of the record. Using the short spindle the turntable only operates in manual mode meaning you have to place the tone arm to the record using the cueing device, the auto lift off return function will operate at the end of the record.
