Default Philips CD160 CD deck.

I have just acquired one of these on my local freecycle site.
(made in 1986 so I guess it's vintage by now)
It plays well but the display is U/S nothing lights up.so I can't see what is
happening. The display driver board has power on it so I suppose it is duff.
The ic is a sort of 'black blob' stuck to the display board.
I wonder if anyone knows if this is a stock fault and if there is any chance of
finding a replacement board?
It looks like a nice bit of kit so it would be a pity to scrap it.

Failure of the display is a common fault on this machine. I’ve had one from new and bought a replacement from Philips Service and it was eyewateringly expensive! I very much doubt you’d get one from Philips nowadays. Initially, individual segements fail.

However, I would check the power supply rails. Dry joints on the power board are common and should be attended to first.

The service life of these machines was 7 years.....that's the time in which major components were guaranteed to be available. Philips stopped supplying spares to consumers over 20 years ago....

I'm not sure if the replacement displays are in their webshop yet, but they are talked about in the forums at www.mfbfreaks.com

Thanks for the replies, I suspected it might be a problem.
I checked the regulators when I first opened it up and they have already been re-soldered. I suppose I can still use it by just playing a disc from start to finish which how I usually do it anyway.
not that I need another cd deck, already have 3 but I thought it was worth having a look at. Best Regards- Mike.
