Default Relay contact cleaning.

Hi all,

I’m restoring a Rock-Ola 403 jukebox (valve amp) which contains relays that either stick on or don’t make contact.

In the past, on advice, I’ve used cardboard anointed with Servisol to clean the contacts, however in this case it hasn’t worked. In some desperation I used 1200 grit alox paper which actually worked. I know this isn’t right.

I can’t seem to find a reasonably priced set of relay/switch contact burnishers. Any recommendations?

Many thanks

Worth trying fag packet cardboard and lighter fuel (might get better result than with Servisol)

Thanks, I’ll try that. I went through all the contacts with the cardboard/servisol, and some functions that were previously working, stopped working. After a bit of exercise they reappeared.

You might try a finer emery - perhaps 5000 or 6000 grit. It'll remove tarnish easily, but very little metal; lube it with white spirit or lighter fuel. It's often used to put a final polish on guitar frets for just those reasons.

Cut it into strips 1/2" wide or so then fold it lengthwise; it'll be stiffer and it'll clean both sides of the contacts at once.

You'll find it on Amazon.

Cheers,

Frank

Try "Nail Buffers" they are in essence a very fine abrasive on a stick, available on the high street in various grades.

Electrolube CCS are designed for the job and work well.

We used to use Crocus paper on relay contact which needed attention, like ultra fine emery paper, not sure if it is still available Maybe very fine wet & dry would be OK

Thanks, but that looks a little bit too big for getting into small relays.

I’ll give the electrolube strips a go.

No problem, I think this was the sort used for PO type relays.
