Wasn't that the one that supposedly was made for the American market but the consignment being shipped during the war was lost at sea and only one prototype remains? They were a work of art!

I'm working on an HMV 1604 radiogram and found a later rim drive deck (45000AG) in better condition that the original one (45000AS) which has the Hysteresis motor and gearbox.

But - not sure what the value shown for the motor capacitors is on the service sheet - see photo attached. Is it 0.6uF?

I've now got the motor out and am beginning to dismantle it. The good news is that all 4 coils are intact. Although the two capacitors referred to above are reading just over 1uF, I'm not sure that I trust them, so will replace them (as I did with the original deck). Are they supposed to be 0.6uF??

Not yet sure how the rim drive works - what keeps the pressure on the gimbled motor so that the rubber bush on the drive shaft presses adequately against the inner rim of the turntable?

And - why is there no input transformer on the later deck?? Was the cartridge different??

Well I have worked on another EMI Autochanger
Having finshed I'm delighted to say it works perfectly
Is this an older model than the deck I am having problems with?

I have just had someone in Norwich, Norwich Restore, recommended to me
I'm going to send him the HMV Record deck to him to see if he can sort it
I have heard very good reports about him

BSR was an incredibly high tech company. I think their first record deck was the original Monarch of 1953. They produced some very fine 78 rpm recording equipment and workshop diagnostic test gear and go back a long way.

I never had a single problem with them and serviced all their models in record players and radiograms. Incredibly reliable and I never experienced any record wear with the mechanism after many hundreds of playings. They were employed by many leading manufacturers. Hats off to BSR. Birmingham Sound Reproducers. RIP. [The plastic horrors of the 1970's were nasty, produced due to cost cutting mainly demanded by the discount warehouses]

The EMI deck being EMI is an odd one especially looking like something out of a hospital. It took me a very long time to cut all those grooves in the auto drive gear. That was a good while back and I must admit it is still working well. The pick up fitted in the 1902 is only 25ohms and two pick up transformers are fitted in series [original EMI]

Just to finish, another very reliable autochanger but not often uncounted is the PLESSEY unit from around 1955. Extremely simple and as solid as a rock! John.

Yes I have to admit I never had any problems with BSR Decks
The first one I bought was a UA8 followed by UA14
Just out of interest, you wouldn't like to sell me your HMV/EMI Autochanger would you, I really would like one of these that works

Two of the very best domestic autochangers ever made. Not for Hi-Fi magnetic heads of course but no changer ever was.

It certainly says .6 on the circuit and uF would be the only logical unit!

If the capacitors measure about 1uF on a basic capacitance meter and a resistance check at working voltage shows them to be fairly leaky, then the indicated capacitance will be on the high side. I'd try fitting 0.47uF with some 0.22uF in parallel and see whether function is OK.

Worst case scenario would be to overheat windings if current is too high but this won't be instant and temp rise can be monitored in case it gets excessive.
