Apologies if this in the wrong section of this forum but I think this makes very interesting reading.

Re: Signal equipment..... Lend - Lease Shipments.
Thank you. This is very interesting, and new to me.
Under Lend-Lease I see that 8,323 HRO, 1,070 AR-77 and 8,261 AR-88 receivers were supplied to the British. I wonder how much other stuff was supplied, but not under Lend-Lease. I simply don't know.... 73 John |

Lend Lease was quite a complicated affair, involving several countries and bi-directional, not the simple one way transaction we (at least I) usually think of. Our war debt to the USA was finally paid off as late as 2006.

Re: Signal equipment..... Lend - Lease Shipments.
That does make for an absorbing browse- does "British Empire" encompass Australia and New Zealand? I wonder how many of those AR77s, AR88s and HROs still exist (and other miscellaneous sets of potential post-war civilian interest)? I note also that some 6,000 MI-8319 vibrator packs for the AR77/88 were supplied to the "British Empire".

Quite fascinating, all valves listed by type. Amongst the more obscure items, I see they supplied 118,000 homing pidgeons!

It makes you wonder how much of this vital equipment etc. would have to be reordered owing to the huge loss of merchant shipping during the Battle Of The Atlantic in the U-Boat war.

I remember in the mid 1960s, we had some ex wartime Australian designed & built "AT14A" transmitters still in use,----some were from the RAAF, but others were ex US Navy. HROs weren't quite as common in Australia as elsewhere, although I had one a friend picked up in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The Oz equivalent, which looked like a HRO's "twin" was the Kingsley AR7. I'm pretty sure it could "mix & match" coil boxes with the HRO, but the internal circuitry was a bit different. AR88's were reasonably common, though many of them were still in govt service, as were many AR7s. Surplus stores were full of AWA AR8/AT5 Rx Tx system, another Australian design. Obviously, Australian forces in Europe (mainly RAAF & RAN) & the Middle East, shared equipment with the British, but how much stuff was brought home, I don't know. I do know that many of the surplus types common in the UK, & some of the US ones, never saw shelf space in our surplus stores. |

It wasn't just the allies at it. Someone at a G-QRP Christmas get together in Rochdale brought along a Japanese wartime copy of the HRO.

Re: Signal equipment..... Lend - Lease Shipments.
There were a hell of a lot of WS19 made by Canadian Marconi co. with Russian markings on the front-panel, shipped to Russia under some arrangement similar to the US-UK Lend-Lease scheme.
I also recall seeing a WS18 with Cyrillic markings and 'odd' valves - who made that I wonder? |

I remember seeing the Russian 19 sets in the window of Passingham's government surplus shop in Bradford. Well out of reach of my pocket money unfortunately!

When Sputnik 1 was launched in 1957 a photo appeared of a Russian monitoring station, complete with a rack full of AR88s.

Sigh. Certainly does, long gone now.
