Default Chuo Denki YM-118 Mag Cartridge

Hi everyone,

For some time now I have been using a Chuo Denki YM-118 mag cartridge on a Thorens TD150 MkII turntable with Quad II amplifiers. I set up the input sensitivity by trial and error (the plug-in adaptor in the Quad 22 control unit isn't fun to muck about with). Question is, does anybody have a tech data sheet for the YM-118 cartridge? It would be nice to make sure I've got the tracking etc adjusted properly. I got a replacement stylus from the Stylus Lady but data about this cartridge on the Web seems virtually non-existent. Does sound good though.

Cheers, Jerry

Mysterious little Chinese devils, these Chuos! I have used a few of their little ceramics - cheap as chips and perfectly adequate but no info and no mounting clips! There is this - https://www.stylusplus.co.uk/stylus-...dge-5402-p.asp - but I expect you have seen it - might be worth giving them a ring to see if they know anything more.

What tracking weight is this set at? Do you have an alternative MM cartridge fitted into a headshell that you can directly compare the output level into your Quad with?

Thanks to RojDW48 and to Edward. From the link I now know it's a spherical diamond stylus. Prior to getting the Thorens turntable (the cartridge came with it) I was using a Pioneer PL112D. In that I was using an Ortofon FF15E and also tried an Audio-Technica AT100E. The Chuo Denki beats both of these for sound quality - the high frequency response sounds better than the Ortofon and conversely the AT100E sounded brutally harsh at the top end. Also I found the AT100E was very intolerant of some of my well-worn vinyl; maybe something to do with stylus diameter? Output level on the Quad now seems OK as I am using a Quad 22 Type A adaptor with 47k resistors for R1 (in lieu of the specified 68k). I also fitted new equalisation capacitors.

That all sounds good. I would have thought 1.5 grams is at the lightest limit on the Thorens TD150/Mk2's arm. Enjoy!
