Default Quad HIFI system

Hi all I have just bought a Quad system 405/1 FM4 33 preamp and a pair of ESL 57 speakers for £410 ( great news ) but the whole system once examined looks as it has been ridden hard and put away wet . Sockets on the ESL 57 have cracked and fallen in to the input transformer along with the dust of ages and fag smoke , the FM4 has the usual RIFA cap blown but the 12v rail is down to 7.8v when the plugin cpu chip is in place ( no led's on the front panel ) the 33 again has the RIFA cap blown ( yet to test the audio side ) and the 405 /1 has the usual burnt pcb and leaking caps with a melted choke .

I have now many hours of fun rebuilding the lot (goes to show the great bargains you can get on line) watch this space for the rebuild

Dave

ESL57's probably have blown treble units as well unless the 405 has been limited. Good luck.

Hi one of the ESL 57 works fine ( the 405 had the limiter resistors fitted) I have yet to test the other one as for the 405 I think it is ideal for a project I have in mind ( new power caps 22000 uf and 2 quad clone amps I bought for £33.50 a few months ago )

Hi Just tested the 33 preamp and the only 2 things wrong were the RIFA and the bulb I will in due course upgrade it DADA style to the 16v rail to give it better headroom

I've done that mod and it is well worth it - the best £20 you can spend!

Cheers,
Steve.

Hi All, I have started to rebuild the Quad ESL 57 speakers The back legs were in a poor state but match sticks in the hole and Gorilla glue worked wonders. A quick wax of the wooden parts removed the muck of ages. Now to the ESL inside the power unit has the old Bulgin type socket ( new IEC one to be fitted ) and the audio transformer has broken sockets ( replaced thanks to RS). I now need to remove the front cover as it has dints in it

As far as I know there are no codes for the Quads and I have seen your question is asked by many folk on the internet and forums.

I am about to paint a 405 and a 44 myself and have just bought the paint from a local car paint specialist who can match any colour and put it in a spray can - they have an analyser but the Quad coulours required further tweaking by eye. Rather than use a semi matte paint the guys recommended that I use matte paint and finish with a semi matte (eggshell) lacquer which they have also supplied. We also noticed that the colours varied a little between the two amps so there was some difference in paints as originally done - perhaps the batches varied over time?

I guess they aren't local to you but here's the link to give you an idea of the place - super nice and helpful!

Hope this helps,
Steve.
