Default NCV Live Test

Hello All

I was scanning some DMMs for sale on eBay and some have a NCV live position on the range switch.

What is this test?

Best rgds. Stef.

Its for Non-Contact voltage sensing, there will be a sensor (usually on the top of the multimeter) that allows it to sense voltage (usually mains potential) and will sound/flash a warning if voltage is detected.
Generally used by electricians so they can check if a wire/cable is live before working on it without needing to access the conductors.

And rather handy to find where cables are in walls, saves that "drill, oops, bang" moment. Another use is locating a failed bub in a series Christmas (sorry, Saturnalia) light string.

Ah yes a cable tracer/finder. Useful to have it built into your DMM.
