The Record indicator I think is the window that sits in-between the 2 VU meters.

How did you clean the rec/play switch?
There IS a record indicator - it's a red bar that should light up between the meters.

If switch cleaning doesn't cure the problem and it's nothing else obvious then I would connect a suitable signal source to the line inputs and monitor the line outputs when set to record, if no audio frequency coming from the line outputs then it might be HF oscillation, hard to say for sure.

For signal fault finding I always used a 'scope when I was in the trade...best tool out for that job.

I cleaned the rec/play with swich clener and played it gently back and forth ther record light does not light up only light there is is the light for the hole vu unit on the side

Make sure the record/playback switches move right over when in record mode.

So can see that the separate Record lamp is not lighting when Record is selected when you are actually looking inside the unit ? i.e. can you see an unlit lamp.

Lawrence you were right, the record/play switch was not going all the way over. Slight adjustment and voila now records.
