Very odd old Band I aerial
How did the feed arrangements work here?
http://www.rhiw.com/hanes_02/rhiw_fi.../aerial_03.jpg Has it even been assembled correctly? Here is the parent article. http://www.rhiw.com/hanes_02/rhiw_first_tv/rhiw.htm

Re: Very odd old Band I aerial
It looks like some form of splitter harness with the co-ax going to the middle of the driven elements through the end of the driven element tube a bit like an rf choke. If it works is anyone's guess.

Re: Very odd old Band I aerial
It probably would work, it may affect the symmetry of the antenna, you sometimes see a similar feed arrangement with MF verticals Like the old BBC MF Franklin at Daventry are fed Up the inside and terminated at a height.

Re: Very odd old Band I aerial
Probably the two dipoles were simply connected in parallel, and with the effect of the director elements the match can't have been very good.

If the story is correct it must have been reasonable to receive Holme Moss albeit noisy.

Re: Very odd old Band I aerial
I have seen two 625 TV aerials connected in parallel in the past.

Photo of a stacked UHF Array in post 11, I remember helping install that one.

Re: Very odd old Band I aerial
By the end of 1938 TV&SWW published a map showing locations of good reception beyond the normal AP service area.

Re: Very odd old Band I aerial
Also there's another report from 1950 monitoring signal strengths at Greatstone on Sea in South East Kent(nr Lydd and Dungeness).
AP Ch1, Sutton Coldfield Ch4 and Eiffel Tower 46 MHz vision, 42 MHz sound(441 line transmissions) were observed. https://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/publications/rdreport_1950_25 |

Re: Very odd old Band I aerial
I'd still love to have somebody figure out if in fact
those lines coming out the driven elements' ends are feedlines. I've tried and failed to find out a way to make it work. |

Re: Very odd old Band I aerial
Judging by the telephone pole in the background there is something very odd about the orientation of the array.

Re: Very odd old Band I aerial
There's a BBC report showing the Holme Moss
service area here. https://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/publications/rdreport_1954_02 Once Divis started up from Northern Ireland he'd have probably received a better signal from there. |
