In the mid-1970's, one of my fellow engineers made his name by solving instability problems in our newly-designed phase locked loop oscillator by identifying the cause as thermally-generated noise in the resistors of the R-C loop filter, and fixing it by substituting low-noise types.

When I was at Oxford Instruments, we manufactured a PID controller for cryogenic inserts. The idea being that you had a source of cold (liquid nitrogen or helium), a heater and a temperature sensor. So you could dial in a temperature (say 100K) and the device would provide that. For testing the temperature behaviour of samples, often in a high magnetic field from a superconducting magnet.

That likewise needed low noise resistors - I think either the long-defunct Holco, or RC55Y's (which the Ligo team found were among the lowest current noise resistors).

Youtube seems to have gone in for saturation bombing with the same adverts over and over again, sometimes a pair every two minutes, and perpetual banners in-between

One that has started following me around tells me to 'Breathe new life into my hifi" and reassures me that there is a 60 day cable money refund guarantee...

Grrrr!

I know we've discussed audiophile fuses on this thread before but there's a new one in town, rendering all previous audiophile fuses as only fit for use on your kettle.

And we know this one is bound to be good as it has "Quantum" in its name...

Ah yes the title "Quantum Science Audio Silver Extreme Level UK 13A Fuse
£4,200.00"

EXTREME Level price! Note it does say Free Delivery and guaranteed for 12 months. How generous of them. I bet they'd really lose out replacing any under warranty!

This must be the worst kind of old nonsense I've seen in my entire life. How can anyone believe this old garbage. Rant over.

£4,200 for a fuse ! You would think that even a seasoned Audiophool would give them a wide berth.

I see it's directional as well, does it have semiconductor properties?!.

That's the function of the little rubber band - to denote the cathode !

I was in the hi fi trade and one of the reasons I left was this garbage by the turn of the last century all common sense and engineering now how was being ridiculed by this nonsense a lot of it by the so called hi-fi mags at the time
quality brands could not deal with this garbage

Perhaps they can do lower amperage ones
on special order? And then compare the sound of 3A, 5A, 7A, 10A and 13A?

Mods: the font has gone small don't know why.

Directional fuse in a 240v AC supply....

I get it! you're supposed to open the plug and turn the fuse around 100 times per second. Simples! The skill lies in getting in sync with the supply.

Having an inventive mind, I've just invented the rotary fuse mounting so that the spinning fuse (end for end) carries only unidirectional current. If the fuse is £4200, then what should we charge for the spinner?

I was thinking that a device something like the old synchronous inverter vibrator could be used to make the current unidirectional in the fuse. A simple answer of course is to put the fuse in the middle of a bridge rectifier and in series with the mains: then sell the discerning punter some capacitors to put across the diodes to quench the diode switching noise.

(If anyone now trys to pedal that idea I want half )

If the silver one costs £4.2K what on earth is the forth coming gold one going to cost?

"Bottle neck distortion". It is distortion, so it should be measurable, right? Oh - what is that you say - it cannot be measured? Oh dear how sad.

Hey - for £4200 you could buy 200 180g records instead. I know where I'd put my money, if I had it.

From January, the figure of £4200 is roughly what the average household is expected to pay for their annual energy costs. It makes you think doesn't it?

Many will struggle to find this sort of money and yet others have that much disposable income to squander on ridiculous items such as this.

It is a Hong Kong product https://quantum-science-audio.com/ . Whole load of mad stuff there, including the stupidly priced above fuse. No mention of "bottle neck distortion" though.
