Re: Looking for WWII bomb bay footage
Hi Nick
Looking good on the video! The stuff on Google Earth can be removed by deselecting boxes on a window that flies out from the left - some sort of OPTIONS selection - I'm at work now so can't try it but you can pretty much get rid of all the clutter. Cheers James |

Re: Looking for WWII bomb bay footage
This might not be what you want, but...a chap in my club has the actual gubbins from a lancaster bomber. It works. He can fire it up, track over a map, add wind speed etc and it compensates.
If you need to speak to him PM me.your email and I will pass it on. David |

Re: Looking for WWII bomb bay footage
David,
Can you clarify what gubbins you're talking about here, please? Many thanks, Andy |

Re: Looking for WWII bomb bay footage
Well, not 100% but i'ts the whole nav / aiming kit. From what I recall (I last saw it in use in April) it's the gyro system. It has many feeds, which he can provide, and it then 'flies' over a moving map. Whether he has the drift calc or whether he simulates the feed from it I cannot be sure, but it is a pretty hefty bit of kit and it's terribly complex. If ever I saw a better testament to my friends nouse I don't recall it!
I will ask him...stand by |

Re: Looking for WWII bomb bay footage
Me too, it would be very interesting to see, if he lets visitors see it.
Maybe I could pick you up on the way Andy. |

Re: Looking for WWII bomb bay footage
I think where he keeps it it cannot be displayed (its huge) but he certainly does take it to clubs and demonstrations.
If enough people are interested I could probably persuade him to do a live deom at , say, the Vintage aero collection in Old Sarum if that helps anyone. Mind you, its a heck of a schlepp from Cumbria! The aero collection might make it worth an overnight stay though. David |

Re: Looking for WWII bomb bay footage
I just got this from him:
"I do have aparatus that will calculate wind velocity, course, heading etc and did directly input compass heading the the WWII bombsight. I think the thing he is looking for are drift sights such as the Kollsman Drift Sight MKVI, B3 drift meter, Drift Recorder MK II, and Tail Drift Sight MKIVA. I do have the AP1234D "Air Navigation" describing these and how to use them" Is this going in the right direction? David |

Re: Looking for WWII bomb bay footage
I know virtually zilch about WW2 aircraft navigation but if anyone needs magnetic declination figures going back in time for any location for whatever reason then this site is a good one for quickness and ease of use (The BGS have a site as well) I checked it out with some research I did years ago and it's pretty much spot on according my measurements for a specific location I was interested in, originally I got the declination angle for the year 1864 for that specific location from the BGS some twenty years ago by phoning them up and giving them the year, location etc, no easy web based data back then:

Re: Looking for WWII bomb bay footage
I've always referred to it as declination, not that it matters so far as naming it goes.

Re: Looking for WWII bomb bay footage
Hi Nick
Original WW2 film is difficult for many reasons including rarity, film quality etc, and normally exists only in short film cuts. Most British bombing shifted to night time, so daytime film is hard to find, as noted by others. US 8th AF continued daytime action. The video quality is mostly quite poor with both, as the intention was not to have best quality archival footage. The video in the YouTube clip in post#10 by David is not bad. The DVD "Bomber Command 1939-1945" by Pegasus Films (RAF only) has some footage, but mostly short clips of poor quality. The original US movie "Memphis Belle" has some good daytime footage of reasonable definition, and in colour; you can easily remove colour. The method in post #16 by Nick offers very good possibilities. Maybe edited to show some real WW2 action clips as well? Maybe also ask at IWM Duxford for their suggestions? Just rambling thoughts. Good luck to you. Last edited by Radio1950; 30th Nov 2018 at 11:25 pm. |
