Default Valve R2R recorder - make ?

This is as heavy as any Ferrograph ! Similar sort of dimensions but the maker is not known to me. SMS or MSS ? Has ( I think ) B8A valves inside. Speeds are 7.5 and 3.75 . Working condition not recorded.
I will provide more details if anyone is interested.

30

Collection advised !

The paint finish reminds me of Windsor, but it could be typical of that era rather than just that manufacturer. My father had a Windsor Regent, which had similar paintwork but in green.

This looks early to mid 1950s and appears to be well built.
Is that a LANE tape deck in there?

It's an MSS, using their own deck. MSS was Cecil Watts' company, originally producing nitrate discs and cutters. So important was the company to war output that it was taken over by the Post Office for the duration. It was then passed back to Watts and subsequently taken over, with the new owners developing magnetic tape and recorders - the BBC used their PR-15 tape alongside Emitape. Watts went off to run a tea-room and later produced the Dust Bug so reviled of modern hi fi snobs, whilst MSS were eventually bought and run down by EMI, largely, I think, because they didn't want the competition in the nitrate blank market.
