Default Radiophonic Workshop+Dad's Army

[1] TONIGHT Proms 11pm BBC4 Pioneers of Sound. Turntablist Shiva Feshareki re-creates radiophonic riches. Derbyshire and Oram "pieced together from recently discovered archive material". Recorded on Monday last and Broadcast Live on R3 then but not flagged very well-so it should be on the I -Player as well! There is a Photo feature on page 104 of the current RT [21-27/7/18]

[2] The new Edition of Radio times [28/7-3/8] promotes Dad's Army Night on BBC2 tomorrow [Saturday 29/7/18]. It's a "night" that start's at 4-35pm and is disrupted by cycling, QI etc. Songs of the Border is finally showing at 9pm, though, after being pulled for Tennis some time ago! I should warn that BBC TV is increasingly subject to unannounced schedule changes to suit either a sport audience or themselves trying to boost the figures. The rest of us don't appear to matter!

There is also an interview with the actress Helen Baxendale!

How do you watch TV?
"We've still got a cathode ray TV with a big back . An ancient, massive thing. All our teenager's friends come round and say the TV's really cool. The picture is so much better than HD TV's-everything looks like film. It's not digital and we still haven't got Netflix. It's too confusing . So we can't pause anything. We can [italics] turn it off...."

Well...they must have "Digit Al" one way or another but the comment about better picture quality takes me back to the debate/comments re CRT and FS on here a few years back. Even the most staunch CRT advocates seem to have fallen away now [often due to domestic pressure]. I suspect that the "better" image comment now is more psychological than actual but it does illustrate the "retro effect" beautifully

I have LCD\PLASMA tv's dotted all over the house but in my front room I have a 36 inch crt Hitachi. I always prefer to watch this one. It's a widescreen and is fed by a Virgin media box. The tube is perfect and the sound beats any tv I have in the house. I keep getting told to bin it but it's staying. Good luck with yours.

Either you are Psychic Tony or you must have picked up on my previous comments re hanging on to a massive 1996 LG 32" CRT set. Still got it and hoping to find a repairer soon. These could be the Pre War Radiograms of the future as most CRT sets seem to have been re-cycled en-masse and without hesitation. There was a specialist re-cycling centre here in the SE that left nothing behind. I don't think they will be hiding out in cellars, attics and barns as in the past

One thing I've never understood is the so called 'advantage' of an extremely thin (one inch thick) TV when most people still stuff them up a corner where there's loads of (wasted) space at the back. Yes, a few people do fit them to the wall, but then there's nowhere to fit/place the much needed soundbar.

Wall mounting appears to be coming more popular, not that mine is on a wall.

May record some of the Dads army ones to watch in the future, the Radiophonics will have to recorded, past my bedtime. Ok on the heads up on the cycling interruption, not being sports enthusiast it’s something to definitely miss.

I watch very little that’s not recorded, watch it when it suits me, I have more or less been like that since I got a video recorder in the 80’s.

My wife bought a very large smart flat screen tv for my birthday, and it was decided to mount it on the wall. I was not at all keen, I was quite happy with my Panasonic crt model. But I didn’t want to upset my wife !!
So we got electrician in to fit sockets etc etc into the wall.
Up went the tv and sound bar, and I must say in all honesty I’m more than pleased, I accept the picture is not so good as my old Panasonic but with access to the smart hub and all that brings I’m more than compensated.
Cheers

The advantage of wall-mounting is that they don't take up any floorspace - important if you live in a cramped apartment/flat or have rampant dogs/kiddies that bump into things.
Everyone I know with anything but the tiniest of wall-mounted TVs also has a proper AV receiver and/or Dolby/THX-capable surround-sound system to go with it.
