The original Mullard EF86's must have had tighter tolerances. I never had problems in the past and when I built one of these into a record player, I didn't even use a particularly good output transformer....adequate of course but not excellent.
For what they are, these little amps give a good account of themselves.

When I was about 14 I built a 3-3 using only "available" parts which included an EF36 and a KT61 with an unknown HMVish output transformer - worked beautifully.
