Re: Oscilloscope Collection / Junky
hello friends,
our world is a small town, thanks to the internet ! The special dual fet from the input stage of my 5A22N (151-1027-) was found in the nederlands and is on the way. The friend who found it was searching for the screen frame + filter of a 7k, both parts are on the way to NL, it was in my spare parts collection. So 2 Tek become repaired. greetings Martin |

Hi Martin, how stable is your SWOB III at 500KHz?
(and how do you get your green phosphor to show white...) |

Re: Oscilloscope Collection / Junky
Hi Martin,
Happy Easter! If you're about to get your first storage scope, I can pass on some advice I got a long time ago... Always set the intensity with the storage system working and the persistence turned down to something short enough to be usable, NEVER with it set to 'Conventional'. Good oscilloscope tubes are capable of high beam-current densities making very bright spots, so that they write a visible trace even when triggering and delayed timebases and 'holdoff' mean that the beam is off for a large proportion of time. This means that the beam, when writing a slow-moving spot can be powerful enough to burn the phosphor on the screen. This is well known to ordinary scope users. Storage tubes have the same beam current capabilities to allow them to write at very high speeds for non-repetitive signals. But they have some fragile mesh structures behind the screen. It is very easy to burn the storage mesh without even knowing you're doing it. Run the scope with 'normal' storage settings, low persistence and a dim trace. Now gradually increase the intensity and the spot will get brighter, though the stored after-glow following it will not get any brighter. At some point the picture will start to bloom and light will spread outwards from the spot. You now have more beam current on that is good for the life-expectancy of your tube. You should reduce the intensity until the spot is not blooming, but just leave it for a moment. Switch the storage system to 'Conventional' and your picture changes to that of a normal scope with no persistence enhancement. The spot won't seem unusually bright. What this means is that if you use a storage scope as a normal oscilloscope, you can't tell when you pass the point where you start to damage the tube. Storage scopes are best saved for when you really want storage for viewing slow events and one-shot events. If you do use a storage scope, try to avoid using its 'conventional' mode, and run it with some persistence enhancement working This also applies to spectrum analysers with storage tubes. Most storage scopes I come across have damaged tubes because few people know how to drive them. What you find is permanent bloomed areas left on the screen that pushing the erase button will not clear. Sorry about the lecture, but it's something that any user needs to know, but it's not common knowledge. Good luck. I hope your unit has a good, undamaged tube. David

then it will not run away. About the phosphor: this is a P7. P7 is light-blue, with green shadow, very slowly shut down. There is some different graticule glasses, when you use the green plate it will not show the blue beam. Change it to the transparent, to see the same then me. greetings Martin |

Re: Oscilloscope Collection / Junky
Hi Martin, I only have the CX1252 plug-in that came with it, very similar to the Tektronix type CA.
Rob.

Re: Oscilloscope Collection / Junky
Got the 'Tron working without too much effort, now got a healthy 12kV at the final anode.
The triggering was initially a bit jumpy, but has settled down now. Pic shows rise-time of calibrator output, 20Vpk-pk, 0.2us/cm sweep. Rob.

Nice pic Martin. Maybe it's time for a web-page (or site) to show off your collection and restoration work?

hello friends,
the fine old 565. Not so fast but fascinating, one of the both heavy Dual Beam Scopes in 19" size, the other is the 556. greetings Martin |
