Re: Much Magic Smoke - But Amp still playing - NAD 3030
This is Sean and Ian reporting back on the tricky situation of the smoky NAD!
Switch removed and found to work perfectly - but the green gremlins do no look to be resistors, capacitors or inductors. They sit accros the switch - which may make them possibly VDRs?? Anyway, the switch has now been wired correctly and the gremlins removed until we know what to replace them with. 1000v cap replaced. Fingers crossed. While in pieces I'm going to replace the VU bulbs, but as the second one has now blown I cannot measure the current draw they have. They appear to be running on 6.3v AC SEAN |

Sean here thanking all for offers of components - and the link to the switch at Rapid looked like a perfect fit.
thanks again SEAN |

As rough guide, if someone just says 'smoke' without further qualification, it's a fair guess that a resistor or transformer has gone up.
If they add a comment that it stinks worse than a bonfire of sumo wrestler's jockstraps, then Rifa is likely the answer. David

...and, once it’s done it’s thing and expired, you can probably safely ignore it, or at least put the task of its replacement in the roundtuit queue.
Or am I being controversial? Martin

Those green caps are across each side of the switch and are 0.0047uf each. 400v AC

That is what was expected - but they didn't measure as capacitors on a capacitor/resistor/inductor analyser. Or as a capacitor on a dedicated Marconi Capacitor analyser. They sort of suggested that they were a resistor and an inductor in a vague sort of way. They were across the switch, so each positive and negative was effectively shorted out by them making it impossible to turn the NAD off! I have no idea what the schematic thought they were - but without them the amp works for the moment. I've replaced the smoked Rifa with a 1000v cap, that should be ok. Also got both dial lights working with some 12v miniature dashboard lamps stolen from Ian's supplies. It looks much better with both VUs alight. Tip of switch is still missing, so if anybody is breaking a NAD of this era, a black push button would be very handy. One day, all will be printable! THANKS AGAIN to everybody for identification, advice, and offers of spares. And to Ian for bulbs and Cap. SEAN & IAN
