For anyone not familiar with the markings Q and I, these stand for Quantity (current) and Intensity (voltage) which remained in galvanometer terminology beyond their usage in normal electrical parlance.

Does the switch insert the battery in circuit with what is otherwise a straight galvo?

Thanks Lucien. I'd always wondered about the meanings of Q and I.

Sometimes we have to wait many decades for the answer to questions like this!

Not sure how Quantity and Intensity relate to firing circuits though........
