Re: Enarde 7855 nrd identification
Is that mercury inside it? If so, some form of high power position-sensitive switch would be my guess.

Re: Enarde 7855 nrd identification
Hi Dave
I can't see any mercury in the unit just a metal sleeve connected to one contact and a ceramic insulated inner wire connected to the other end, each contact is different size so there is obviously a correct orientation. There is a marking in pencil of 600v so suppose it could be a spark gap or something. John |

Re: Enarde 7855 nrd identification
If you can measure (or estimate!) the 'gap' length that may or may not confirm 600v (but that seems quite a low voltage for a spark....)

Re: Enarde 7855 nrd identification
Perhaps a gas-filled stabiliser tube? 600V does not sound unreasonable for that. Or a spark gap operating at low gas pressure (which will flash over at a lower voltage than the equivalent gap in air at atmospheric pressure I think)

An Enarde logo comes up with Nucleonic And Radiological Developments Limited in Google books:

They also did corona discharge tubes for voltage stabilization:

Early GDT. Even the little ceramic ones of today have radioactive gas inside - IIRC.

Re: Enarde 7855 nrd identification
It looks very much like a corona discharge regulator to me.
Possibly similar to this one, but with a cap connector instead of pins: http://www.r-type.org/exhib/aaa0524.htm |
