Cheney clips and hinges
Hi
I'm sprucing up my late 50s Cossor portable record player and the hinges and spring clips are fairly tatty looking and rusty. They are marked "Cheney England" so I did a search on the net and found a company called Abbey that appear to be a wholesale saddlery. In their range of locks and hinges they appear to have the exact same brass plated hinges and spring clips as fitted to my old player. Has anyone used them? They require you to sign up for an account before ordering which I'm not keen on, particularly as there are no prices on the site. http://www.abbeyengland.com/ The hinge 4274A in brass at 1 3/8 inch and the spring clip H3333 in brass would appear identical to my 1957 originals and I can't find them stocked anywhere else. Re: Cheney clips and hinges
Small shield catch, gold, 45x28 mm, £1.35 looks about right. Can't see my hinges there though but they're on the back out of sight most of the time.
Searched for his details, he gets a lot of mentions. Found the link: http://www.vintage-radio.com/trg/ Thanks Mitch |

Re: Cheney clips and hinges
I've just done the catches, handle brackets and hinges for a Dansette RG31 on a wire wheel and they came up like new. I sprayed them with gold paint and they certainly look good and it keeps it original too, mind you I think they are the best bit of the machine as the rest of it seems terribly built, BSR deck ok though.

Re: Cheney clips and hinges
To tell the truth, the "cabinet" of mine is little more than a few bits of ply covered in sticky back plastic and paper
I thought of wire brush and gold spray but a lot seem very orange whereas the brass is fairly yellow. What paint did you use? By the way, I've been repairing the scuffed corners of the leather cloth with artists' acrylics mixed to the right colour. I mix it thick and brush it on the bald spots then feather it out at the edges with a wet finger. I'll post the results once it's all back together. The fabric has a fine yellow polkadot over the blue green base. I may attempt that with a pin head dipped in yellow but, honestly the areas are too small to notice they're missing. |

Re: Cheney clips and hinges
I get the enamel stuff from Wilkinsons (own brand), they do a good antique white which is excellent for restoring bakelite painted radios and record decks. The gold is also very good for radio grilles but unfortunately they don't do a suitable BSR or Garrard grey. They do a black gloss, white gloss, primer, gold and silver which look really good, I think they do a few other colours.
If you need a silver for a radio chassis, Poundland do a wheel paint and primer which is excellent value as the Wilco ones have recently gone up from £3 something to £4 something. That Plasticote satin stuff is good for painting damaged bakelite sets but it's expensive and overpriced in my opinion. |

Re: Cheney clips and hinges
It's good to see Cheney's products are back - they were the leading British cabinet lock and latch maker, but got themselves into financial trouble in the 1990s when they rescued another old company.
There has been an awful lot of rubbish from the Far East in the past few years which looks looks like Cheney, but ain't. So let's support Britain, again! Barry |

Re: Cheney clips and hinges
I bought a pair of clips from an ebay seller who specialises in Dansette record player parts. (Sadly the hinges on my Cossor don't appear to have been used on Dansettes as well so he doesn't stock those.)
If anyone's interested in what the new clips look like they're identical to the old ones in dimensions but are marked Cheney UK rather than Cheney England. The set I ordered came with a set of new brass finish, dome headed screws too. I have attached photos of the old and new and, just in passing, a third showing how much the fabric has darkened with age when the clips are removed. Mitch |

Re: Cheney clips and hinges
Tricky to tell, it's either 4273A 1 3/8in or 4274A 1 3/8in. Mine measure 1 3/8in across but are 1 1/2in high. I'll have to contact them unless anyone else has ordered either of these and can measure them for me.
Thanks for the link. Mitch |

Re: Cheney clips and hinges
I've just spoken to them and their website is out of date. They don't make the 3323/ 3333 latches or the 4237/4238 hinges either.
I'm looking for these items if anyone has any idea? Cheers Martin |
