Philips 1756U
About to embark on the restoration of one off these sets. Anyone got one? Obviously all the black caps will have to go. Looks a good set looking at the circuit.

Re: Philips 1756u
Some time ago I received an enquiry from a customer about restoring a Philips 1757U which is the console version of the 1756U.
It's most likely that almost those black tar goudron capacitors will need replacing. Comprehensive service data for this set can be found in the 1956/57 Radio and Television servicing book. The 1756U is a high performance receiver designed for use in fringe areas. The vision IF amplifier has three EF80 stages. A proper sync cancelled vision AGC system and flywheel line synchronising. Re: Philips 1756u
I had a few of these out on rent in the '60s and they proved to be very reliable sets. Don't remember much about them now apart from the pitch capacitors but they were common to most Philips stuff of the time.
Hope the restoration goes well. Peter |

Re: Philips 1756u
This was a set our family had when I was a child, I obtained one just over a year ago after searching for a very long time. I haven't done a lot with it due pressures of work (I was working in and around Dublin last week during the bus strike). My grandparents and two other relatives also owned them but each had very slight differences in cabinet presentation. I'd be interested to see yours.
After replacing the only the mains filter capacitor I managed to get a picture and sound but the set has a frame fault. One thing to watch out for is the dreaded partial short on the CRT heater, the gun assembly used in the MW43-64 and other Mullard CRTs of this era were very prone to this. Although mine is afflicted as I only read 4v the emission appears to be good. You can see here how far I got with it. It's in a warm dry place just waiting for further work. I'm looking forward to see how you progress, faster than me probably. John. |

Re: Philips 1756U
Good evening all,
Got the chassis out this evening. Hope to make a start soon. Fernseh thankfully I Have the 56/57 Red book. Jayceebee mine looks to have been kept warm and dry for its life. I bought it off the granddaughter of late a Philips employee. I reckon it should be fairly straightforward hopefully. Regards, John Joe. |

Re: Philips 1756U
Hi Tas,
Still a work in progress. I'm half way through re-capping it. Got a new EHT rectifier valve (EY51) for it as one of heater wires had broken off just under glass lip. The caps are all very leaky indeed. Cheers, John Joe. |

Re: Philips 1756U
Not sure of the model number of this one. It came by way of a customer in 1975. It worked quite well back then but has not been touched since. It came from Southfields London SW18 so it is probably the non fringe 1446U type chassis.
Should be easy to get going. The LOPT is 100% reliable. It appears to have a replacement Mullard MW43-69 tube so there is hope. I'll put it back on the 'to do' pile.. Regards, John. |

Re: Philips 1756U
HKS, that's a Philips 1747U, IIRC. I remember seeing one of these in a local BHF charity shop, but was only for sale through their eBay account. I missed the end of the auction and consequently the set
There is one on Gumtree in Bristol, that I linked to in the "where to get sets" section. |

Re: Philips 1756U
Hi John,
Thats a nice looking set, hopefully it won't have to wait too long! Am I right in thinking the first two digits of the model number refere to the tube size? Cheers, John Joe. |

Hi all,
Hope everyone is having a good Christmas. Sadly life got in the way of this one (jury duty for starters). Hopefully will crack on in the new year. Regards, John Joe. |

Re: Philips 1756U
Hi All,
I finally got back around to this set. Having replaced most of the caps I put the chassis back in the cabinet. When I powered up I had no line drive. I disconnected the screen grid resistor from the line output valve and began too check around the line oscillator. I soon found I had placed C76 on a wrong tag. When I powered up again the oscillator started pumping around once a second. I finally found that R82 was open circuit. With this replaced I had a healthy line whistle but the boost voltage was low (around 300v) and the EY51 heater was not lit. I knew I had replaced the boost cap so I tried a new boost diode. Still the same so I tried a new line output valve, bingo! I now had a boost voltage of around 415v and a bright raster. I had a slight fold over at the top of the frame. This was cured by replacing C90. Someone in the past had put a 1meg resistor across R89, perhaps to get more height out of a failing frame output valve. Someone also had disconnected R40 (12k) which is across S21 on the first vision IF transformer, would this have been done to try and increase gain? A little bit of tidying up to do but I'm very happy with this set. Cheers, John Joe. |

Re: Philips 1756U
Great receivers Philips. They always perform very well and I can't remember one that caused me grief. That will be a very reliable TV. John.

Re: Philips 1756U
That looks very good, I hope my set turns out as good as that when I eventually get cracking with it. Mine too suffered some bodgery in the frame stage which needs to be sorted.
