Poor rewind could be due to the upper drum casting becoming highly polished (wear). This was a common problem across many Beta machines.

I used to refinish these (not this model though) very very successfully by using car valve grinding paste. A few gentle wipes around the whole casting with a soft cotton cloth and some paste removes the shine and imparts a slightly 'honed' finish. They looked as good as a new part and performed just as well.

Mooly is right. I have two VTC 9350's. One of them had poor rewind due to a sticky head drum. Watch this video at 31:23

This also does a pretty good job:

Hi guys, thank you for your response.

Dj Fivos - I looked at the YouTube video and noticed that the guy used sandpaper to clean the upper drum. I may try that because my upper head drum looks very dirty. Also read the boiling tyres but I don't know how to take them out.

With the tyres, I don't know how to take the tyre out. I tried but badly struggled. I'll try the rubber rane to see if that will solve the rewind issue.

Mooly - many thanks. I'll try the sandpaper tip and see where that will take me.

Hamishboxer - I'll have a look at that now. Many thankd

The thought of going anywhere near the head drum with sandpaper frightens me to death,

I think Mooly's paste or Hamishes Duraglit would be a lot safer !

Thank you steve1010uk for your comments. After reading your comments I've decided not to try the sandpaper trick and try the Abro paste, recommended by Mooly. The paste cost £6 and just paid for it. Do I use this paste on the idler tyre or just the upper head drum?

Just the drum. If the paste is anything like the stuff I used (and I just posted that as an example but it does look the same type of package as mine) then it will be what seems to be super sharp metal fillings suspended in oil. So you have to polish the drum with it off the machine and then thoroughly wash and degrease the drum afterwards.

The finish you are aiming for is a fine 'matt' appearance. Perhaps do some tests on a piece of aluminium first to get the feel of it.

Hi Mooly, so once I've polished the head drum with the polish I have to use water to remove the polish and then degrease the drum. Is this correct? What do I degrease this with? Vegetable oil?

It is the upper casting that you polish, nothing else. You can clean it by a variety of methods. Hot water and washing up liquid and really soft paintbrush should work. You have to get every trace of the oil and abrasive material out of every nook and cranny.

It has to both look and be perfect. It should stand visual comparison with a brand new part when you have finished.

If the drum has any removable guides (such as in this picture) then unscrew them and take them off.

Ok, once I've applied the polish on the upper head drum I'd have to remove the polish with hot water and washing up liquid. Is this correct?

I've just received another belt kit with the tyres for this player. As previously stated, I don't know how to take off the old tyre off.

Don't know how to remove the head drum as I've never done this in my life.

I've tried adding picture of the head drum. I haven't done this before so I'm giving this a try.

Just for the record ,I have never had a sticky head drum as it is the lower drum that causes drag and what I have used Duraglit on.

Ok, I'm hoping to resolve the problem this weekend as I should be receiving the Arbo paste, as recommended by Mooly. I'm a little bit scared due to serious lack of experience. I only know how to change belts and clean the heads.

I posted pictures of how the head looks at the moment. Upper drum looks pretty dirty.

Can I use the paste on the lower head as well? I know it's mainly for the upper head drum, as mooly explained earlier

Doing this is not for the faint hearted.I've seen many calamaties sadly by those attempting to improve things but making things worse.
Anyone working around the fragile video head area be warned.

The upper casting will be easy to remove, its either screwed on from above or secured with an Allen key at the back (its decades since I last saw one of these).

Be careful to remove only the correct screws. Look at the picture I posted. DO NOT remove the screws securing the top bracket to the casting, remove only the ones securing the casting to the lower drum section. Any plastic guides on the other side of the casting should be unscrewed and removed for cleaning.

Hi guys, I'm continuing to struggle with the rewind issue. I ordered the Arno paste but the seller gave me spray. I sprayed a tiny drop on my cloth and rubbed onto the head. The spray left Black marks on the drum but managed to get rid of most of the marks. Thankfully, the head was not damaged as all the tapes I tested provided a clear picture.

I tried to roughen up the rewind idler with a nail cutter file. Unfortunately this didn't work.

I made two videos for everyone to see. I bought a new rewind idler tyre but have no idea how to replace the tyre.

The second link maybe more helpful to find out what's wrong with the rewind.

Here are the instructions on how to remove the rewind idler. You don't really need to remove the supply reel table though.

Link for the full service manual:

Instructions are on page 49.
