Last 405-Line Off Screen Photos
I'd lost these negatives but found them last night after looking for something completely different- typical. Never did find the IBA TV and Radio 1977 book I was looking for.
Anyway, these are the final off screen images from 405-line transmissions I have. The first shows Jonathan Dimbelby presenting "First Tuesday" on 1st January 1985 from Tyne Tees Television Channel 8 taken off screen using a 23" Ferguson 3655 (BRC 1400) model with an indoor aerial. The final two images show horse racing on BBC1 Pontop Pike ch5 on the 2nd January 1985, again using an indoor aerial. The signal appeared to get weaker as evident on the second photo. It was a long time ago but think Tyne Tees Burnhope ch8 was already off the air when the BBC1 images were taken. The set used was a 23" HMV 2640 (BRC 1400) model. Sorry for the poor quality photos, these were taken using a Kodak Instamatic 126 camera! Having witnessed the UHF analogue switch off in 2012 I never felt the sadness I felt on losing the 405-line broadcasts. Any more final images out there? Would love to see them. Brian Brian |

Hi Brian,
You've probably seen mine already and they are a few weeks before actual switch-off. I understood that switch-off was to be after the Queen's Christmas message. Anyway here she is and the Remembrance Ceremony from 11th November also. Peter |

Re: Last 405-Line Off Screen Photos
I watched the BBC news where the announcer said all transmissions had ceased, except this was on 405 Line only set on channel B1 (horiz) from Llandrindod Wells in Wales - at a range of 40 or so miles. Indeed it had gone the next day. I imagine somebody had to go out to turn it off manually as I understood that Ll. W. had its own Mk2 'digital' standard converter.

Re: Last 405-Line Off Screen Photos
All interesting stuff. Over on the Radios-TV (VRAT) site there was mentioned of Emley Moor ch10 transmitting a still caption about the ending of the 405-line service for several days after the official early January switch off.
Wonder if anyone managed to get a photo of this. Brian |
