Ah thanks for the info. I too like the noises these older machines make. Enjoy!

Just serviced and cleaned the Ferguson (or whatever manufacturer) videostar 8940.

Had to give the casing and fascia a good clean as it was filthy. And altho I got it as "fully working making all the right noises" it wasn't.

Replaced the belts and reconditioned the idlers. Cleaned the heads and fixed the eject mech so it's smooth.

Good results.

Nice machine! I didn't know that Ferguson released a version of this model. I've only seen BAIRD and DER rebadges. This is a rebadged JVC HR-7350.

when I worked at J2T Newhaven on the 8941 & 8942 the black cased versions went out without badging ( if I remember correctly) to the rental shops and the silver case versions were badged Ferguson.

Hey guys,

The badge looks like it's been put on afterwards as there's no branding on the rear of the machine. The internals are identical to the Ferguson/jvc machines.

Cheers

Yeah, they aren't proper Fergusons as such. As in, for example, the 8930 is the Baird/rental version of the Ferguson 3V30, the 8940 has no equivalent Ferguson 3V model, there is only the rental one (and original JVC and whatever other rebadges there might be). Quite often there is no badge. Some have a Ferguson badge stuck on. I have one which is the same, is the badge made out of a softish material? You can tell it's been stuck on after.
Great machines though, the sound is surprisingly good to say it's linear stereo. There also seems to be some changes to the video processing compared to the 3V30 and 3V29 and the tracking behaves differently in my experience, not as jumpy. Now you've got it going, it'll probably work for another 20 years, they seem to be more or less indestructible

The badge is a square piece of grey plastic with a silver sticker with black print stuck on top. It sees the sticker was bigger than the plastic square as it overlapped until I trimmed it correctly.

Will leave it as is to go with my other Fergusons. Did the rental companies provide remotes with these machines? Given it has the option for one. My 3v30 remote works fine on it.

Nice. Never had one of these, do they use the rubber roller eject mechanism?

The collection as it stands minus my more modern vcrs and the Sanyo 5150 beta.

All in full working order now:

Jvc Jr-7700ek (Ferguson videostar 3v23)
Ferguson videostar 3v29, 3v30, 8940, 3v32, 3v35, 3v38, 3v39.
Fisher fvh-p716, fvh-p722, fvh-p725, fvh-p905k, fvh-p915k and fvh-p916kv.

The ITT vr3605 is for parts only. The Philips vr 6541 is faulty at the moment.

Currently working on a NEC N965.

Cheers

You just need a 3V00 or 3V16 now.

A 3v36 is top of my list, maybe a 3v00/16/22 as and when they come about.

Recent work in progress,

Fisher studio standard FVH-P722K (German)

Bit of a story to this one. Got it knowing it needed belts and an idler refurb.
All went well (hadn't been plugged in before this) except for when I plugged it in and pressed the power switch. A puff of smoke poured out from the carriage area and in between the video pcb and the psu. Despite many close checks I cannot find any damaged or burnt out component. Alas I tried the machine anyways. It accepted the tape rew/ff worked. Pressed play and it spoiled up and returned the tape back. The heads were stuck. Freed off by hand and it was smooth enough to turn. Tried once more and it stated to play. Hooked it up to a tv and was presented with a black and white picture with intermittent sound bars every 5 seconds. Despite a few head cleans it's still the same.

Now the problem! The machine plays fine for a few mins (bar the above) then you can hear the heads cough and speed up slightly, the tape runs slightly quicker aswell. Shortly after the tape will stop and return into the cassette. The machine will no longer allow me to play, just spools up and returns the tape.

Tried pressing record and pause which allowed it to work again, but as before the heads would speed up and the tape will stop.

Kinda stuck at this point as I've no idea what burnt out or if it's even related. The black and white pic and noise bars suggest the heads aren't happy, the speeding up is baffling.

Has anyone encountered anything similar? Or can tell me what to check next?

Will post a couple of vids for you to see what I'm talking about.

Sounds like the drum motor IC has been damaged when it tried to move the stuck heads. If it won't lock properly or no chroma, that's where I'd look.Maybe try swapping the whole head /drum assembly with another known worker to check?

Hi Ben,

I looked at the ic at the base of the drum and the coil looked a bit iffy, no burnt marks or anything. Would certainly explain the hic ups with the heads. I don't really want to swap the whole head assy from my other working machines but il try the ic on its own first. Hoping one from my donor FVH-P915kv is the same, failing that il try one off the FVH-P722.

Cheers

I don't see the Ferguson 3V24 & 3V25 mentioned. The 3v24 is a portable VHS recorder for use with a camera, the 3V25 is a matching TV tuner.

John.

Angry Re: Ferguson Videostar and Fisher Studio Standard collector

Decided to look harder for blown caps etc, the closest I could find was this on the video pcb, the wires were covered in a dusting of soot. The cap has a trace on it aswell. Everything else in the machine was spotless.

There was after market timing marks on the loading gear, which came in handy as the mechanism was getting sluggish. After taking off all the cogs and yes losing the alignment I had to reset it all over again (ball ache)

Finally done and whilst it still spoiled a bit slow for my liking it did play, but the hic up with the heads remains.

After a few repeat tried the machine gets slower and slower to spook up. The motor is quite hot at this point so assuming it's on the way out.

Left it 10 mins and it spoiled at reasonable speed and played once more til the hic up.

Il replace that cap anyways but I think if anything it's what's causing the. Lack and white picture. The smoke from this area started as soon as the machine was switched on for the first time, before an attempt to play had been made.

So really back to square one
