Removing tuning backlash
Some quality radios use a gear train in the tuning drive. After several decades, the lubricant has solidified and the split gears can no longer adjust themselves to take out backlash. The gear train has to be taken apart, cleaned and relubed. The problem then is to reassemble with the correct tension in the spring of the split gears.
One solution is to drill a small hole through each split gear before disassembly, near the circumference. Then if after assembly the two holes are in alignment, you have the original factory specs. John. |

Re: Removing tuning backlash
That's a good idea but why not just mark the teeth of the gears with a marker? Mark one tooth on one gear then the teeth either side of it on the other gear...if you see what I mean?

Re: Removing tuning backlash
Rich, I first tried that but washing the gears in solvent to remove the solidified grease also removed the marking pen ink. The hole drilled through both halves of the gear is a sure fire marker.

Re: Removing tuning backlash
Errrr....Yes!! Point taken . I had one recently where the gears were not seized up but required removing because the tuning gang was! It was easy to mark the gears in this case so that tension was correct when re-assembled.
