Yes, I remember that flat one as the Ever Ready 1289. Now called a 3LR12 I think (and still quite easy to find). More recent ones (last 30 years..) have the strips short enough not to touch on the top, meaning I've had to move contacts in things designed for the older ones.

But they would seem to be too small for the space in this player. If it has room for a pair of 800s, then it's likely a larger 4.5V battery was used.

EAR was involved with Perdio somewhere along the line, and Perdio were inclined to obtain 9v from 2x AD28 batteries.
Bearing that in mind, and looking at the available space, I would think this originally had exactly that layout.
Which is fortunate, as the size is still available. Period labels may well be found on the Internet.

PS. Is it '45s only'?

Perdio acquirred the EAR brand name in 1962/3. They also made the CIVIC brand. I only ever knew of these using 9V batteries, never 6V.

1959 Perdio PR73 Continental is the set I'm thinking of.

Runs on 9v, derived from 2x AD28 4.5v batteries

I don't know how to post a link, but Google will produce an image.
