Default NVCF on-air meeting suggestion

I wonder if any Forum members who are also licenced radio amateurs would find a pre-agreed net 'meeting' frequency useful while on the NVCF site?

My suggestion would be S22 (145.550MHz FM, exhibition/rally talk-in frequency) and I'll be listening there!

Not sure what to make of the resulting 'radio silence' except that I guess it's going to be quiet on S22!

I'm guessing most people will be too busy searching for stuff to be having a net.

But maybe what could be seriously useful is if one could call for assistance e.g. for info on items found, etc.

I always seem to spot a thing that I might well want if only I knew more about it. I have considered taking along a PC, but it would be too much trouble I think.

If anyone needs a meeting point or cry for help the B&B stall usually serves. We're in a prominent position and know quite a few people. Don't think any of us are amateurs so we won't be on air. Nor on line. Helps if folks wear badges with both their real and forum names. In some cases (naming no names) this serves to remind the wearer who they are.

I'll not be going to the NVCF but since it's just a few miles down the road from me I'll listen out on 145.550MHz on my ancient Icom IC2E. I may even try and renew my license between now and then so that I can talk back.

The most useful aspect of having ham radio on site is that if a group of enthusiasts know what each is looking for, they can 'spread out' and alert each other instantly if something interesting is spotted. I've done this with a couple of friends several years running, and it has enabled us to snap up items which may otherwise have been sold before we got to them

Having said that, a mobile phone can serve the same purpose, subject to network coverage being available.

In the absence of other suggestions, 145.550 MHz it is then! Mikey, I'll probably be using my own old IC2E from 1982 which is still going strong, and I hope to chat to you sometime.

If I remember to charge it up I'll make it 3 IC2Es and bring mine along.

Great stuff Keith! With radio hams, two's company, three's a net

We could hold the inaugural meeting of the Vintage IC2E Owners Club...

Well they are over 25 years old now so should fit into the forum very well.

Just tried mine and the batteries seem to be still charged so I'll make sure it's fully charged by next week.

That sounds good. If somebody could remind me though - to get 145.550MHz, I set the 3 numbers on the top to "555" and the 5/0 to "0" or do I set the top numbers to "455" and the 5/0 to "5"? Thinking about it, I guess the latter is more likely...

Thanks Phil and Keith.

Kind regards.

From Mike.

Mike

I must admit it's ages since I've used it in anger but for 145.550MHz set the thumbwheels to 555 and the 5/0 to 0.

That's it! The first two numbers, not shown of course, are "14" then the thumbwheels indicate the remaining tens of Megahertz, and the final switch adds 0 or 5 Mhz to the indicated frequency. Hence 145,550 MHz is indicated as [14]555[0]. Crude but simple, and very easy to QSY quickly, but hopeless for scanning, and of course it cannot cope with the modern and quite unnecessary 12.5kHz channel spacing.

Ah. Okay. I never was much good at maths.

I hope my license arrives in time. I've had to send Ofcom some copies of my old C&G RAE stuff and a slightly-vague 11 page form along with 20 quid...

Judging by the level of on-air activity on the day (precisely none) I guess everyone's ni-cads must have gone flat or the IC2E thumbwheels were set in the wrong place... or maybe I didn't hear anyone calling in the hubbub of the exhibition centre... or perhaps it was the annoying presence of a couple of chaps having a rag-chew on my chosen frequency that put people off. Never mind, I had a great day and I hope you all did too!

I did take the IC2E and yes there was some activity on S22 but I'm sure I heard you but I couldn't be sure if my radio was transmitting on the right frequency (It's so long since I used it in anger) Perhaps that's another restoration project

Oh, that explains it. I couldn't understand why I was getting such poor copy. I assumed it must be the building.

Inside the hall the background noise meant it was also too hard, so I gave up.

Thanks chaps. I now accept that it was a thoroughly bad idea and I won't be bothering to repeat the suggestion next year!

Mods, please put me out of my misery and close this thread...
