That's a fantastic job, David. Comparing the set before and after the work you have done brings home the amount and quality of the effort you have put into it and I'm sure there are many of us on this and other fora who can only dream of achieving such a result.
Just think - you will soon have more time to do this sort of thing and vans loaded with grotty cabinets will be wending their way up (or down) to you for your ministrations .

Hi Brian, I just can't wait to get out of this shop and start doing some proper work like the 900 resto. In the meantime might as well use the place to clear up other jobs. There's Jonz Philips 563A TV set to tough out.

David, I can highly recommend retirement, but I find I am busier than ever!
Looking at the standard of your craftsmanship, I don't think you will have any shortage of work, at least you will be able to enjoy what you do without the hassle of running that shop.

Take my advice David. Don't retire. The result is far too strenuous but I love it! John

Absolutely right John - there are never enough hours in a day. In retirement, I seem to be working 28/7

Hi,

That is a serious bit of restoration David and you've worked a miracle on it. If this doesn't encourage other members to have a go at cabinetwork nothing will.

Very well done indeed I'm mightily impressed.

Kind regards, Col.

We've decided that the patch repair to the left side of the cabinet is not satisfactory so the veneer is to be removed and new piece of veneer covering the whole left side will be glued in place.

That's the old veneer removed. A new matching piece has been found and will be glued in placed very soon.

That's the new piece of veneer in place, that nasty patch has gone.
The left side of the cabinet looks far better now.

I agree, Dave. When the grain is contorted, then patches can be disguised fairly well (by some people) but when linear, then replacement of that section is often the only way. The rest of the restoration is so good, it would have been a pity to leave that patch - I am very surprised that HKS didn't comment on it .

Hi Brian,
The cabinet restoration job was signed off late 2012 but I was not at all happy about that patch. It had to go, so on Friday I plucked up the courage to redo the panel. Removing the veneer was not all difficult and there was not too much corrective work to do to the surface of the front panel.
Fortunately, I found a piece of veneer that matches the other side, so a degree of symmetry is maintained.
As well as that patch we have the extra bonus because those woodworm holes are gone and the new veneer defines a perfect edge to the cabinet. All those chips and repair pieces are gone.

It sounds to have been well worth it, Dave.
How are the electronics getting on - Trev's doing those, isn't he?

Hi Brian,
That's right, Trevor did the electronics. We were talking about the set today and he suggests that we go through the capacitor reforming process again before the final assembly at Mikey's place.

Before and after pictures. I think you'll agree it was a worthwhile effort removing the old veneer. That awful patch has gone.

I didn't want to spoil David's fun. He did it all with 'Photoshop'..It's still the original old motheaten cabinet in the flesh with a bit of digital fiddling.
Time to own up David.

Seriously David, a fantastic job. Compares very favourably with the design on mine. Cheers, John.

OK John,
I better own up, here's another picture of the set. I better move fast and sort it out before Mike finds out.

That's the original "before" photograph and shows what a marvellous job you've done.

Default Final assembly of NVCF HMV900

David has just replaced another strip on the back of the cabinet that he was not too happy with, sorry no pics as his camera is not working, and hopefully the set will be re-assembled on Sunday 11 Sept at the North East Meet (details in clubs, groups & socs section)

If anyone wants to watch the final assembly and hopefully test you are welcome to pop along.

Mike & Margaret
