Default Ferguson videostar 3v55

Hi,

This machine was working perfectly before I put it into storage, now when I try it from cold the display is all lit up, but only the power button responds and lights up. No channel numbers and no other functions work. It will accept a tape but only eject if I use the timer button. (Being a prerecorded tape with no tab)

When switched off at the mains then back on for a second time, the Aux channel light is on and the : of the clock. Nothing else.

I've checked the capacitors on both the power supply and the tuning board but none show faulty.

I also removed the battery to prevent acid corrosion of the board. (Which was no worse than 2 years ago) I have checked all tracks for continuity, with only one link wire in place of a black track, that was still conductive.

Can anyone shed some light on what I need to check for next please?

I really like this machine forums picture quality. And I'm not one for giving up.

Cheers

I can't remember if this model used a bulb in the cassette detection area. Anyway a quick check of all the sockets and switches might help, since muck could have got in, or something knocked out of place during storage.

Dealing with the damage from NiCads can be difficult especially with this type of pcb which is made of SRBP, essentially compressed paper and readily absorbs the leaking electrolyte which is conductive.

First of all what have you used if anything to clean of the contamination? If you haven't already use copious amounts of IPA and scrub with an old toothbrush, then leave in a gentle heat somewhere for a couple of weeks. I used the above method to bring a similarly and extensively damaged Commodore Amiga back from the dead recently, for the heat treatment I used the cupboard which houses our combi boiler.

Remove and renew the solder on the large IC and any pads where it looks dull. Be very careful with the ribbon cables to the front display panel, try not to flex them too much as they are easily damaged. Would't hurt also to fit a new battery and check the resistor that feeds it.

Good luck.

John.

As mentioned, if the battery has leaked in the past it may have wicked-up underneath neighbouring components, or even created a conductive path within its vicinity. As suggested, a general clean up with white vinegar and then IPA may help matters, so worth going over again.

Also check all IC protectors/ fuses which may be easier to locate if you have a service manual (check the component listing in the back).

Those damn circuit protectors (N15?) used to give trouble on these. They seemed to go o/c for no reason. Check also soldering on regulators and IIRC there was one on the big main board.

I removed the battery altogether as its only for the channel memory, can't find any shorts anywhere some of the solder points are well dodgy looking, a couple I tried to redo lifted the track with the solder, I sourced a donor machine with hopefully a better board. Will see when it arrives.

I second Ben's post - check for any that have gone O/C for no good reason. They aren't always in the manual, so best to just have a look. Denoted CPx they look like little transistors.
Otherwise the STK series of regulator ICs can be suspect.

Update

This machine is now working again, as suspected originally it was indeed the smaller board with the battery backup. The donor machine arrived with a duff psu , so I swapped the whole front panel and smaller board over as I know my machine plays well and was also alot cleaner inside. I removed the battery as it is just starting to show signs of leaking. The machine now operates properly. The top cover and fascia from the donor machine were in better condition than mine so I gained from that too. Not bad for £3.

Trying to repair the psu in my second 3v55, which is also the same type used in my jvc Hr-d150. Both psus are dead.

I have blanket capped this 3v55 but still nothing. I'm wondering if the circuit protector should be open or closed circuit for this machine? Currently its closed. However my fv11r has 2 open circuit protectors and works just fine.

Is anyone aware of anything else on this particular psu that fails?

Thanks

Check the primary winding on the transformer.
Then see if anything comes out the other side!

Those circuit protectors were notorious for going o/c for no good reason, check them all, myabe you missed one.

Hi Ben

I can only see one circuit protector. 2 pin, whereas the one from the fv-11r is 3 pin. The 2 pin one from this 3v55 is short when checked with a meter. The 3 pin one is open when checked across any combination of the 3 pins.

The 35v 2200uf cap is receiving power, making me think the transformer is ok?

Cheers

Sorry but you have me baffled. I'm not sure what you mean by the 3 pin type on the FV11R but that item would not be a CP they only ever had two connections. They are effectively fuses and I've never seen a 3 terminal fuse, type numbers in the 3V55 are usually F10, F15, F or N25. Their rating is the number in the type multiplied by 40 e.g. F10 = 400mA, N25 = 1A There have been several versions of the 3V55 PSU each with slight changes but I'm fairly certain they had more than one CP fitted.

John.

I assumed by th fact it had CP on the board beside it that it was a circuit protector. Black D shaped with legs /\.

I'm the baffled one lol.

Part arrowed, though I snipped the leg as I wasnt sure if making it open circuit would make any difference. I have a spare one anyways.

Don't know what that is you have arrowed, looks like a coil or inductor to me. I have circled what look like two circuit protectors visible in your photo which should be checked - unsolder one side and if o/c, then replace.
If they have three legs you can leave them alone, as they are not CPs.
