GEC 2013DST Television.
Clearing an elderly relatives property today and I spotted this TV buried in an outhouse. As it was a rather handsome looking TV, instead of it being chucked I stuck it in my van. Is this a desirable TV? Don't know whether to stick it on an auction site, offer it on here (any monetary gain would go to the relative) or take it to its original destination?

Re: Gec 2013dst
I'd say that was a good save! You certainly did the right thing in not dumping it. It will be a dual standard model and I'm sure would find a home on here if you want to move it on.
How about some photos? Steve |

Re: Gec 2013dst
GEC 2013? That has to be the very desirable 13" portable model, known as the Crystal 13 if my memory serves me well. A similar set was the subject of discussion in this forum a few months ago.

Re: Gec 2013dst
Of course! David's right- it will indeed be the Crystal 13 portable. At least one member on here has a working example. Step forward Brian!

Re: Gec 2013dst
Sorry to disappoint folks, the Crystal 13 is the model 2015. Nevertheless, GEC 2013 is still a worthy dual standard set.

Looks good to me! I'm sure that could be revived without too much trouble. It will clean up a treat.

Re: GEC 2013DST Television.
Set was made in 1965. Note the yellow print Mullard EF184 valve. The letter M to the left of the BVA symbol indicates the valve was made in 1965.
VHF tuner looks like it is a Philips AT7650 The same type of tuner was used in the Philips Style 70 TVs and many other manufactures in 1965 and 1966. DFWB. Last edited by FERNSEH; 16th Sep 2017 at 10:04 am. |

Re: GEC 2013DST Television.
Thanks for the replies.
I agree the TV would clean up very well, its absolutely filthy inside and out, however I reckon half an hour with some fairy liquid and a sponge would clean it up a treat. The cabinet is actually in very good condition as is the chassis. I'm touching 50 and I don't ever remember seeing that TV at my relatives so god knows how long it has been in that outhouse. I would have loved to have had a crack at this myself however my lack of knowledge and my bull at a gate approach to everything probably prevents me from doing so . The only thing I can see that is an issue is that on top of the cabinet there is a small scratch that looks very fresh, so that was probably me , also the chrome is coming off the plastic bezels surrounding the tuner dials. The inside looks untouched. I hope someone on the forum will want to take this on, I will put it on sets offered. Regards Poppydog |

Re: GEC 2013DST Television.
It's not for me but I only ever saw one, it was the TV they used for my C&G course 48 practical final exam.
They must be straightforward sets, I passed, 4 faults, line, frame, video and sound. Must admit though 4 easy faults, I temember the line fault was O/C print on the line output valve cathode, video fault was S/C video detector, can't remember what the other two faults were. Long time ago 50 years, oh dear.

Re: GEC 2013DST Television.
Hi Poppydog,
I would be very interested to take this on as it seems to be the development of the chassis fitted to my GEC 2000DST released the year later. (see 'nearly a Sobell 1000DST' thread for more details). I've just been studying the circuit and it would seem to be almost identical- apart from the transistorised tuner. It will be interesting to see how they developed one chassis into another. Transport from the Devon/ Cornwall area may also be possible!! All the best, Nick |

Re: GEC 2013DST Television.
Great receivers! The only let down is the 'Fenbridge cap' CRT protection, a tough plastic skin that was stretched over the faceplate. [No, it is not what you thought the name implied'.
They used to go a nasty green/yellow colour caused by nicotine poisoning as this one has done. They started off transparent with millions of tiny 'pimples'. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done in way of cleaning but the Mullard tube will be nice and bright overcoming the light loss to a large degree. This model also appears to be fitted with the later tuner that is much easier to clean. The five position Sobell unit used in earlier models is a very good tuner but requires quite a bit of disassembly to gain access to the switch contacts. Nice to see the original back screws. The LOPT will require drying out before use. They were a weak point. John |

Re: GEC 2013DST Television.
"They used to go a nasty green/yellow colour caused by nicotine poisoning as this one has done" Not quite sure how that has happened as the relatives never smoked, perhaps it is the thin layer of green algae you can see on the screen.
"Nice to see the original back screws" the picture shows the back on with no screws so I sense a hint of sarcasm? |

Re: GEC 2013DST Television.
Those Fenbridge guards did change colour, perhaps it was something in the plastic degrading. They could be a to replace on a replacement CRT, especially the first one, they did get easier with practice.

Re: GEC 2013DST Television.
I used to have a 2017 model that VHF radio capabilities and some minor differences in the circuit. Front layout similar but had a darker green theme.
Lack of width on 625 only is apparently common. I had this but a new PL504 cured this. One of those rare instances where changing a valve cured the problem! Brian |
