The hum may be nothing to do with the turntable, but the amplifier you are using it with. The speed issue may be within tolerance. Does it sound OK to you irrespective of the strobe indications?

Re the hum rumble. make sure the bass control on the amplifier is set to zero (that is half way) and the loudness button, if it has one, is off

I'm just running the turntable through a pre-amp into our home cinema system (JVC) which didn't have any hum previously (and doesn't when running TV etc).

Home cinema systems are bass heavy so may have hum etc from a turntable.

The Sub Woofer in your TV system will emphasis any residual hum present. Cinema sound systems are not really designed for music reproduction but for sound-tracks.

Check to see that the turntable ground lead is connected properly, according to the tuntable manual (I googled it) it is a part of the main audio lead out of the back of the unit. Some pre-amps do not have an earth connection so you'll have to extend the earth lead to connect to your TV system amplifier. Lack of an earth connection between the deck and an amplifier will cause hum issues.

"...the control for the strobe for 33½ is on the limit and doesn't quite slow the dots down (it was fine before)..."

In addition to the user-accessible speed control adjustment controls on the main circuit board, there are two trimpots, one for each speed, which set the regular adjustment knobs for correct speed at centrepoint. Set the regular speed adjuster knobs to center position, then adjust each appropriate trimpot to achieve correct speed.
