Hacker Mayflower RV20 cabinet scratch repair.
Been able to acquire a Mayflower II in nice working condition.
Cabinet is largely unmarked with just some minor scratches to the veneer on the top. The scratches don't go all the way through they are just on the surface so what's the best way of removing them and restoring the colour without seeing the old line of the scratch. Best polish too please - - I want to retain the original finish. David. |

Clean it with a mix of white spirit and boiled linseed oil (with very fine wire wool if you have some). Allow to dry. Finish with a good bees wax finishing polish.

I did that but with real turpentine and linseed. Seemed to work for me but the smell was terrible while doing it. I had to get the turps from an artist's shop as I recall.

Re: Hacker Mayflower RV20 cabinet scratch repair.
Thank you to both for the suggestions.
In the end used a friends suggestion which I have to say doubted would work when I first heard it but as I had material to hand and didn't think at face value was harsh thought I'd give it a go. What was the method - - it was rub fresh hazelnut fairly hard across the scratch and watch it disappear and blimey it worked ! The scratches which I admit were very superficial did just disappear and to maintain the slightly oily finish around where the scratches had been - I used the hazelnut on the whole of the top before polishing it off. Then applied a couple of coats of Wood Balsam to the whole cabinet polishing each one and must say I'm pretty pleased. Amazing what you can do with a nut ! |

If it worked it worked! Good stuff.
Where do you get a single fresh hazelnut from though?

Re: Hacker Mayflower RV20 cabinet scratch repair.
Martin,
Good question, nuts in shells tend to be in abundance around Christmas. We though are a "nutty" family so had an unopened pack of Waitrose best in the kitchen cupboard so I raided that for a couple of nice big kernels. The rest you know. I didn't believe it till I saw it - - - not sure it would work with deeper scratches though. I do though owe you an apology it was a Walnut - - not Hazelnut - sorry. David. |
