Re: AVO Multimeter survey
I feel your pain.
Lately I have seen enough of these 'steampunk' articles. The prices they want for them is utterly ridiculous.

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Hi Group,
Now here is an interesting one. Could this be the youngest Model 7 ? Absolutely Mint, even has both it's Rubber PF Socket Dust Plugs. AVO Seal still intact, so probably never been opened. Label on the side like a 8MkV MOD7/2 2/87 (Feb 1987) Latest Date in the Survey for Model 7's is 1977 and there are several from this Year. I have previously seen a 1978 Model 7, but this one Trumps it by 9 Years! Anybody have anything younger in their collections? Ian |

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
The terminology of steampunk is morphing, 'upcycled' is becoming 'saved'- this is disconcerting because people will be led into thinking that by buying contraptions they are doing their bit to commemorate cultural/technical history.
The Model 4, i regard as 'finished' now, the original leather strap was present but unsafe..replaced it. Originality has it's limits.. Dave |

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Superscope's invitation prompted me to look at my model 7s and alas cannot beat that though as you will see from my model 40 list I do have a 40/7/78 instrument.

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Hi Richard,
Can I just confirm some of those Numbers with you? The Database has pulled up some Questions! 40mk1 40485-642 Aluminium black crackle Is this possibly the same Meter reported on Thread #1274 The number there was 40185-642 One digit different which seems coincidental, so thought it better to check. 40mk2 91517 40/12/75 Bakelite Is this possibly the same Meter reported on Thread #1110 The number there was 941617 A few similarities in the numbers so again, thought it better to check before entering them in as New Numbers. The extra discriptions I think are very useful and informative. I will try to work out a neat way of incorporating this info into the Survey List in the Future, although at the moment, this infomation wasn't widely reported in past, so is not generally available. Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Hi Ian
Apologies, Looking more closely I see that I that i had misread the the 1 as a 4 because it has a pronounced downstroke correct number is 40185-642 as stated previously. 1975 meter has a side label so not so clear but on second look I think 91617 is more likely. The black labels on later instruments sometimes very difficult to read as the printing has worn away. Sorry for confusion.

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Well anything is possible of course, but it wouldn't really make any sense,
as it would have been just as easy to have printed 1102 at the end, following the normal tradition of abbreviated Dates. It is more likely that your particular Mk VII simply didn't have the Date attached, as is very common among the Mk V's. The only person I can think of, who might be able to shed any definitive light on this is AndyGilham (if he reads this), if by any chance he is able to locate any achieve manufacturing Data at Megger. It would definitely have been recorded back in the Day, but I'm sure Andy would have told us, if he had found Serial Number Data. Sadly, British industry is notorious for having Binned Manufacturing Records years ago having been deemed worthless and a Waste of valuable Space to keep. Just my thoughts. Ian |

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Hello all well. I am new to the group and want to register my two AVO. Avometer 8 MK III N ° 96477 469. Avometer 8X MK III (Panclimatic) N ° 97230 569. All worked perfectly. I apologize for grammar mistakes because I do not speak English and I'm using the Google translator.

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Thankyou for your contribution, josewan. I wonder if those meters from April and May of year 1969 may have been originally bought at the same time. I am glad they are still working!

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
They may have been bought at the same time, but not by the same person. The first one was sent to the USA, because there is a label of an American company, and then it came to Brazil. The second was bought by a Brazilian telecom company.

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
A Universal Avominor without a date..
No. U.17848 Unusual.. The facia moulding (pic 2) is the type which has smaller legends which are more deeply incised. The scale plate is the less bold type, (slightly less easy to read, typical on early meters but sometimes used on later ones) and the high voltage bobbins are the type which have patent numbers showing on their paper wrappers. The rectifier is the smaller type which is pear shaped and has (thin) coloured wires. It's clear from stripped threads and missing screws that i am not the first visitor, and it could be the case that an early movement is sitting in a later meter. If not, could anyone index meter 17848 against theirs to give an approximate date of manufacture? I am thinking early 1935. There is nothing to indicate that it is a 'special', it is totally bog standard. Dave |

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Hi Dave,
I had a look in the Database and the nearest I can come up with, which have Dates and the Five Number Format are the following: 10755-34 U 23115-36 U 23187-36 U 22666-35 I can only go by what was reported, so no idea if 10755 has a preceding U at the front. AVO Minors are not my strong point. It was reported on Post 229 Page 12, but looks like the Poster never came back and that was their only Post. Based on the above, I think your 1935 estimate is probably spot on. Ian |

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Dave,
Had a second thought! Based on the Numbers we have, looks like production was running at about 1000 Units a Month give or Take. That would make yours more likely Late 1934. Probably October-ish. I need to concentrate more with simple Math. Ian |

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
I have got what looks like a lovely multiminor Mk5 98093.
I have done my quick blood red tinting trick to reveal the serial number for purists. If anyone has an internal photo of the movement it would help me as it needs to come apart. The pivots are floating loose however there is continuity and some in the movement life when terminals are touched on a diode tester. I will start a new thread some time in the next few weeks. |

That is a later type case which i think did not appear until the mid to late fourtys. Mike |

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Mike, it's interesting you should say that, i did wonder if it was a 'marriage' since i have a meter from 1945/46 with that style of moulding. The movement has most certainly been taken out at some point. The cardboard rear cover and instruction plate look contemporary with mid forties. There is no sign that those metal straps you see at the rear on earlier meters were ever fitted. There is no red 'fly speck' on the needle though i cannot glean anything from this since it seems on the Model 1 this feature was fitted rather randomly through the production (and i suspect it sometimes flew off in later use!)

The serial number is impressed into the dial before painting by the looks of it so the contrast is poor. |
