Default Cossor 737 - 78rpm Gram pickup help needed

Hi,
I've got the radio working well - but gram was completely dead.
The coil in the pickup was o/c, and the rubber wires perished.

I've fixed the coil, and I'm about to reassemble, but the pickup doesn't seem right as I think there should be something holding the 'flapper' that is above the needle?

Should it be a piece of rubber or hard plastic or something else. A few bits of red something fell out as I repaired the coil! (can be seen in photo).

Any ideas?
Thanks
Keith
