Capacitor replacements
Hi, I believe 1 or more capacitors (black waxed covered ones) are faulty on my Phillips Disk Jockey Major and would like to replace them.
What type would be best? and if the specified voltage isn't available, can i just go 'up' to the nearest one, Thanks |

Re: Capacitor replacements
It really doesn't matter what modern capacitors you choose to replace those cylindrical waxies, as long as the DC voltage rating is the same or greater than the origanal.
I use cheap polypropylene metal film capacitors. In the interests of safety, there is one exception, often there is a filter capacitor directly across the mains supply, replace this with a 250v AC X2 rated capacitor.

Re: Capacitor replacements
Hi again, I've managed to source equivalent modern capacitors with correct or higher voltage ratings, my question now is, do they need to be fitted a certain way round, only i cant see any markings, thanks

Re: Capacitor replacements
Those are all non-polarised capacitors. It's only electrolytics and tantalum capacitors which are polarised and they'll be marked as such.
In answer to your question you can fit them either way round.

Re: Capacitor replacements
Some people are mislead by marks on old wax caps which look like polarity indicators. In fact they just mark the wire connected to the outer cap foil, which should be on the earthy side to minimise hum pickup.
More modern caps have a completely different construction. |
