I've never seen this chassis before. Interesting. On the power supply side of things, change the caps that are located on the secondary DC (cold) side, which is after the transformer. That power supply looks weird too. What are those IC in there for?

Just a little info to add from my knowledge of the confirmed JVC FV- Ferguson vcr's:
The JVC's were: FV10B, FV11R, FV12L, FV13H, FV14T, FV20B, FV21R, FV22L, FV26D, FV33H, FV37H, FV39S (S-VHS), FV43H, FV44L, FV46T - I think that's all of the JVC FV's.

It's somewhat confusing that the FV31R & FV32L are sandwiched inbetween those JVC numbers but were infact made by Thomson..!

Great info. That's why I got confused and thought the FV31R was a clone of the JVC HR-D170.

The deck used in the FV31R was I believe manufactured by Moulinex.

Might be a Toshiba deck as Thomson also made Toshiba branded videos. Moulinex video decks (coffee grinders) were made by Philips, called Charly

Yeah. I have a Grundig with a similar U-loading mechanism. Betamax copycats...

I remember that hideous range of machines. I recommended my auntie bought her first video recorder as a Ferguson, unfortunately she came back from Argos with one of those Thomsons. It led a short and sheltered life but descended like yours into comets..definitely not head wear as it was seldom used. I took it in to look at (all that MELF SMD!!)

. It was definitely not tracking properly as shown by the head envelope, cleaning the guides and blocks didnt help and in the end I gave up, putting it down to the tension band or something. She put it back under the telly as she'd grown to like the big clock.

It was replaced by a supermarket model when they started doing them.

Not quite, Grundig likely adapted their own VCR deck design. Also Betamax copied the design from U Matic. VCR was realised around the same time as U Matic, hard to say whether Philips copied Sony or the other way around or neither. The Charly deck seems to have been created out of thin air, it doesn't really look like any earlier or later design.

Thanks for looking for the manual Welsh Anorak, I appreciate it. I can replace them as I go along instead.

Is it as simple as, the high voltage mains side is under the plastic cage?

and about the SMD.... yes, that's odd. At some point I found a resistor has come loose from somewhere. It seems to be working without it and I cannot see where it came from... it was in the bottom of the machine. I don't know if it's happened while I've been working on it or if it had dropped off previously.
