Made in Britain on TV. Last TV maker.
I have just been scanning future progs and found this on ITV4 ch 26 on my 'box' The last TV manufacturer in Britain. It's on on Wednesday 26/7 at 1800
and again on Thursday 27/7 at 11.50 am might be of interest to TV fans here

Re: Made in Britain on TV. Last TV maker.
Presumably it's Cello. They're a bit of a screwdriver operation, but at least they're creating jobs in the UK. The last Premier Inn I stayed in had a Cello TV rather than the usual Samsung. If they've picked up that contract it could be pretty lucrative.

Re: Made in Britain on TV. Last TV maker.
Just watched this prog online, thanks for the heads up. To answer the question, yes it is Cello. All very interesting.

Re: Made in Britain on TV. Last TV maker.
Their website still says that all TVs are made in the UK in Bishop Aukland.
Our TV is a Cello and is perfectly fine. We have it linked to an old set of speakers as the sound is not great.

Re: Made in Britain on TV. Last TV maker.
Cello make TVs for Currys/PC World and Argos. Haven holiday parks install Cello TVs in their caravans as standard. The smaller sets are easily identifiable as Cello through having the unique DVD player built into the rear right. I use two Cello TVs here at home, they are good, but can de a little "glitchy" with the controls.

Re: Made in Britain on TV. Last TV maker.
I see what you mean wd but "screw driver operation" [post 2*] seems a bit harsh . I looked at this company when it first opened and apart from the "made in Britain" angle, thought it had some interesting/unusual products on sale. At that time the prices for their WS sets, in particular, seemed very competetive. The solar powered tv's were unusual and seemed to be aimed at the mobile home market as well as for remote locations, as it now says on the website. I got a bit side tracked and also thought that perhaps they weren't trading any more [like John p6*] but that's not the case! Admittedly I haven't bought or tried out anything but I'm quite interested again. I wonder if anyone on here has come across any of their sets other than those mentioned by wd and newlite p8*?

A screw driver operation may make you think of CKD assembly, but in my eyes it's any kind of assembly that doesn't involve making the main modules themselves. Certainly better than nothing!

l've found Cello branded TV's to be at the cheap and cheerful end of the market, although better than the "one board" chinese made TV's where you can't change the backlight because the screen won't come out without breaking all the clips on the plastic surround.

I watched this. It was quite interesting. But they didn't "make" TVs, they assembled them from parts delivered to them.

Re: Made in Britain on TV. Last TV maker.
All I can see on either that video or the factory tour video is the main PCBs being fitted into otherwise prebuilt TVs, plus some testing. Absolute minimum to claim British assembly.
Reviews on TrustPilot are not good either, and their replies seem to be avoiding responsibility. |

Re: Made in Britain on TV. Last TV maker.
I think Rediffusion was one of the last true TV producers - designed in SW London and made in NE England. The Mk 4A was the last set they produced in quantity.
The 14" portables were all Sharp sets assembled in the NE. All were pretty good sets - unless you got a Mk 4 with an ITT tube. The Videocolor (sic.) tubes were OK though, although not pin sharp. Leon. |

Re: Made in Britain on TV. Last TV maker.
Officially the last true UK TV maker was Fidelity, (source: The Setmakers) Rediffusion became Granada and supplied rebadged ITT-Nokia sets before the TV rental arm became Boxclever.
