Default Private collection of vintage radios and electrical instruments for auction

Hello all,
A few years ago I posted on here regarding a sale of vintage radios I put together. You were all very kind with your feedback and helped make the sale a success.
I am back again with another private collection going up for auction next week.
The Richard Allan Collection of Vintage Radios & Electrical Instruments will take place next Thursday (15/9) at 10am at TW Gaze auction rooms in Diss, Norfolk, with viewing by appointment throughout next week.
Please find the link for the catalogue below as well as a link to Richard's own fantastic website which throws more detail onto the lots included.
I can be reached at r.willows@twgaze.co.uk or 01379 650306 should you have any questions about the sale.
Kind Regards,
Rupert Willows

They don't offer shipping; so I can't imagine any of it going for much..

Seems to me they do, but it's not a "one-stop shop".

There's a couple of items that I'd consider bidding on but as they only deliver in the area - and we are not aware of the level of charges they would want for that - then I would not travel that far I'm afraid. If anyone is going from Staffordshire or West Mids then I'd be happy to contribute to their fuel costs if I won a set and we could work something out.

To be fair to TW Gaze, these charges are standard in the auction world - it's how the houses make their money. TV shows like Bargain Hunt usually don't mention auction house charges to keep things simple for the audience.

Just had half an hour reminiscing on the Gaze auction, the memories come flooding back, I must have worked on most of those pre war and 40'- 50's sets in my youth. I'm surprised the prices are so low, must be thousands of those sets still about. The Ultra twin Coronation was particularly memorable. We used to sell the Bush TR82. Avo meters for about £10! cost a fortune back in the day.

Thanks for posting those, I will probably have another wallow in nostalgia later.

First of all they're only guide prices, not 'for sale' prices, and secondly, guide prices are sometimes pitched on the low side to attract bidders. But surely if "there's thousands about", that's justification for a low price anyway?

Old radio prices have been becoming increasingly weak for a decade. There are simply more radios available than potential customers.

I think the Gaze valuations are generally realistic, particularly when charges are added.

The hammer prices are posted now - at least it looks as though nearly everything has a new home. A number of good bargains, and if I'd made the journey I would have had to think carefully about just how demanding a lot I ought to be endeavouring to bring home via a couple of buses. Probably nothing quite as heavy as I now and again took on twenty or thirty years ago...

It's always interesting to look through results and see what market prices really are. The R1155 went relatively cheaply, but it was the bathtub key for £110 that had me rubbing my eyes.

The Eddystone was a bargain too, though the hammer prices are mostly around what I'd expect. I wonder if the no sales simply attracted no bids, or if they didn't make reserves.

I might have bid on some of the transistor radio lots if I'd been there.

A few of the no sale items had no bids. It's an interesting one- I have seen radios go unsold at a specialist auction but then fetch far more money in a general auction where there are more dealers present.
There can't have been more than five of us in the room bidding. A lot of items sold online but the same buyer numbers again and again, so only a few people. The transistor radio lots mostly went to one buyer.
I ended up buying far more than planned, but it's hard not to take pity on 50s woodies at a fiver. The 'star' items all seemed to do well, certainly I missed out on a few. Good job really, wouldn't have got any more in the car!

Ha ha Josh, nice haul!

I've just finished moving house and the back of my Zafira looks almost exactly the same as that! I was working until nearly midnight last night so I've driven it to work without unloading anything.

It's a film star along with Alastair Sim.

Hi Ed,
It's a fairly small hatchback! Not quite as much as the Southend auction at the beginning of last year. The passenger seat had to come out for the tellies that time!
I had some time after unloading and have been through testing them all. Pleased to say most seem to be working after a fashion. Should keep me busy over winter! I particularly like the little Radio Rentals set and that wonderful HMV radio/alarm clock. Hopefully I can squeeze it in alongside the Ultra T401 on my bedside table!

It was sad to see them go but good to know that some at least have ended up with those of you that will really appreciate them. I did find a number of recalcitrant ones when taking them down from the shelves, dusting them and plugging them in for the first time in several years prior to the auction. I hope that you get as much pleasure as I have done over the years keeping these old soldiers alive. They all were treasured by someone before they came to me.
