.01uf capacitors
Hi
Could someone tell me the modern replacement for a .01 uF capacitor as I'm in the middle of restoring an old tape recorder. Best regards Ben |

I suppose what you mean are the modern preferred values of some components? In the case of .01uF, there is no difference other than the way the value may be printed so use a modern .01 which can be marked .01uf, 10,000pF, 10 nF (nano farad = 1000pF) or 103 (103 translates as 10, and three 000's). It's the voltage that is important so always use one rated the same or higher than the original. Most modern polyesters are rated at 630V and these are fine for vintage sets.
Some of the intermediate values like .02, .03, .04 and .05 are not available but you would use .022, .033 and .047 (.047 will replace .04 and .05). In many cases, the values are not overly critical (except perhaps in tone control circuits) so .047 could replace all of the intermediate values without having any adverse effect on performance. Rich.
